Is there a schematic or kit for a DIY 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound solution?
I wonder whether the decoder chip - or whatever splits the audio channels up - is publicly available.
One amp per channel would be nice to have I guess.
Superloud is not so interesting but good clear detailed (tube?) sound.
The JVC combobox looks ok and sounds nice with movies but dreadful with CD playback. Before I replace it with something of the shelf I thought I ask before heading in the wrong direction.
Nope, there will only be ONE system allowed in the living room! ;D

Not unless you are proficient in DSP coding and then you will only be able to approximate an actual Dolby Labs profile. There ARE pre-coded DSP chips available but to purchase them you need to have proof of complinace and an actual liscence from Dolby Labs befre they will sell it to you and the path not cheap, certainly more expensive than buying a ready made device. I personally am a "use what you need and no more" type so my surround system is entirely passive matrix based.Being anal about changing the basic nature of my sonics I can not bring myself to run my main stereo channels through a CODEC ,a CODEC that will take my purely analog signal, send it through an ADC then on to the DSP Core then a DAC before it sees my amplifiers.I want to ADD channels not change the ones I already have so I choose passive with at times a delay path added to the rear channels through my Audiopulse Model 2 Audio Delay Line. for headphones again passive and my own design

oh yeah,if anyone has a shot at making dolby surround sound good it is Jim Fosgate, father of the original Tate/Fosgate logic steering quad decoder technology from the seventies/eighties and that Dolby surround is based on (they added a dialog channel to the basic four channels of Quadraphonics and called it a new thing ) check out this monster www.unitedhomeproducts.com/id88.htm
