You could visit a new beach every day for more than 29 years !!!
Now what were you saying about U.K. beaches ?

That's pretty impressive I must say! I managed to find a site that measured the Aus & UK coastlines using the same scale, using that Aus has a different beach for each 6.17KM, the UK only has one for each 12.32KM and it would take under 5 years to visit them all at a daily rate despite having the advantage of a much greater coastline to land mass ratio.

That is SO sad Derek.... you'd be as well spending two weeks on a sun bed. The miserable weather and the couple of chilly mornings we've had have gotten to us. There's enough money in our 'holiday fund' so we spent spent yesterday afternoon researching a late season break somewhere better than here. Found an affordable October 'all-inclusive' deal in Mallorca with great flight times (should be at the hotel by early afternoon). Booked it, paid for it, booked the airport parking, sorted the travel insurance. Then... I read up on the weather in Mallorca in October. And... although warm, hot even, October is their wettest month. I hope we're lucky. Flying out Tue 13th.

I'd feel better about flying myself, but my wife and I are not keen on having federal 'agents' probing our rectal and other orifices for assault weapons or other such commodities.

That's the bit I enjoy the most :-)
Actually the security routine here isn't too onerous. The worst part is taking off your belt and then hoping your trousers don't fall down as you pass through the metal detector gate.

And... although warm, hot even, October is their wettest month. I hope we're lucky. Flying out Tue 13th. Hi Derek, I hope the weather is good for you mate, the weather in the UK is just taking the piss this year so I hope you get a bit of respite over in Mallorca. As much as I love the sun I just cannot be doing with these tacky tourist resorts and rather spend my holiday seeing the local culture and getting to know the locals.... sitting on a beach all day with "Bob and Marge" discussing the best place for an English breakfast is my idea of hell in the sun, I go away to get away from the UK and not to spend my two weeks abroad associating with ignorant people from "Humberside" who think that all foreigners are "stupid"...... I met ONE English "couple" in Bulgaria who were of the opinion that all Bulgarians were inbred idiots because they didn't understand what "cheese on toast" meant..... I very quickly put them in their place by saying "who on earth would be so devoid of class to ask for cheese on toast?" Ignorant bastards..... they were also waffling on about a place they had "discovered" that served the "full English" AND they also supplied "real" HP sauce..... erm, I said to them "thanks for the warning, I'll do my best to avoid that place" I want to get as far away from British tourists as is possible, they are a bloody embarrassment.... as ignorant as they come and very loud in a most common and brash way. We both went to a place that only the eastern Europeans visit and I shall quote from an e-mail I received from Diana who was a 20 year old chambermaid at the Hotel: "Hello again, Mike!
I already went home because I'm not from Golden Sands or Varna. I live in a small city on the river Danube called Tutrakan. When I finished the tests in the university I was forced to work because I really need money. I convinced myself that was the wrong place where to work but me and my friend hadn't other offer for work, the hotel was the last one. It has a period from 4-5 days in which the weather was really bad (rainy and not too warm).
Before you and your friend come in Golden Sands (I mean 15-30 of July) the weather was reaaaaly warm (around 37-38C). You should to know that the summers in Bulgaria are really warm and the winters are really cold (around -5 to -12C the coldest days). I know what is the weather in UK (I think every person on the Earth knows) it's terrible and I don't envy you. I think if I come in UK i will sick every day.
The most tourist are from Russia. I had never before worked at hotel but I know that the russians are everywhere at Bulgarian resorts. I think they really liked here. I realized that in the hotel had for the first time tourists from UK. We asked more tourists in the hotel if they liked there but most said to us "No, the food is too bad". And we know that, we go at the kitchen and look at the food (It's really bad). Me and my friends who worked there have ony lunch but the Cheff give us the residues of the food which is given to the tourists. It was terrible! I was not eating from the kitchen and inderstand you why you don't eat. Also when you and your friend Rob leave, guests were sick (because the food was so bad) The doctor came to the hotel many times. It was terrible.
I came in Golden Sands with my friend (She worked like washer and you don't see her), the other 2 girls (Violeta and Vesi) I never before know them, we meet there in the hotel. We sleep there but we should get up every morning at 7 a.m. to clean the lobby and at the reception and at 7 p.m. we should go at the pool for lounges (I'm not sure for this word ) We had to do because we were sleeping in the "hotel" (it was really terrible for us)
After we see you for the last time me and the girls thought that you were the coolest tourist for these 2 months. Seriously! The tourists from Russia everyday complain about something. There were tourist from Russia, Romania, Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic and UK. I dare say that the guests from UK are the coolest. The other tourists from all this countries are scaterred, not so clean and not talkactive. I'm really happy person and I like to talk with people at all, especially with foreigners (even I know I can't speak English verry well). Thanks for that you are talking with me, you were the first person not from Bulgaria, with which I speak like friend.
Now I'm really good because I'm at home, with my parrents. I finished work at September 01 and now I'm relaxing at home to September 30. After that I will go in Veliko Turnovo where is my University. I hope this year will be better than previous.
Wish you to be good, hope you aren't sick still and thanks you replied to my letter. Again sorry if I have mistakes!!!
Greetings, Diana." A great holiday spent getting to know the "locals"....... Rob has been on holiday twice a year EVERY year for the past 45 years and he admitted that our "lads" holiday in Bulgaria was the best ever, bar none....... we behaved like gents but we also behaved like a couple of children....... thoroughly enjoyed every second of it! Eastern Europe is the place to go I think...... I'm of to Gdansk (Poland) at the end of this month, for a couple of weeks and will be returning to Bulgaria next summer for a 4 week tour of the non tourist "real" Bulgaria and will possibly cross over into Romania for a few days...... As cheap as chips and the people (if you take the time to get to know them) are wonderful, they are a lot more interesting than your "bob and Marge" types Enjoy your two weeks in the sun Derek Mike. (the coolest tourist )

Cradle snatcher !
I bet she felt old age creeping up on her ! (I envy you.) She was a lovely girl Alex.... we were throwing a ball at each other and she joined in, thoroughly enjoyed herself. Her and her Grandmother were from Sofia (Bulgaria) and we had a great evening with them. Hell man, fun is "ageless" and if you can't play ball games with young girls in a swimming pool without somebody calling you a "pervert" then there is something seriously wrong with our world. I was a lifeguard in an open air pool (many years ago) and absolutely loved the water..... this was my first time in the water in over 30 years and I was like a pig in Mud! Nowhere NEAR as fast as I used to be but was getting back to a semblance of my former self after a couple of weeks..... I lost a stone in weight and that was purely down to all the damned swimming I was doing The 35C daily temperatures also sweated off a few pounds...... I thought I would have come back a couple of stone heavier but it was more like a two week "power" workout in the sun

This was my first "length" in over 30 years (Rob will confirm that) and it was sluggish and slow.... the technique / the breathing and the posture all to pot...... I'll upload the "two weeks later" length a bit further on into this thread where you will see a MAJOR improvement, especially in speed! I nearly burst into tears on the last day when the lifeguard, literally, took the shirt off his back and gave it to me...... it was one of those moments that I will never forget. He was 67 years old and used to be a beach lifeguard..... he'd obviously seen better days and was now relegated to a Hotel lifeguard. Nobody even acknowledged him, he just sat there reading his paper and drinking Rakia all day (the local 57% volume hooch)..... I went over to him on the first day and started talking to him but he seemed to find that a bit strange, not being able to speak English...... I kept at him and on day 5 we formed a universal understanding that "Marlboro and Rakia" were good! he would then come to the pool and "gesticulate" reminding me that I was kicking too much with my legs.... he could see that I "used" to be a damned good swimmer. He would then come over and say "Marlboro!" and I'd give him a fag..... a fekkin' damned god guy who had clearly been an absolute powerhouse of a man back in the day...... he started doing party tricks with coins and everybody at the pool started to join in...... The receptionist "Cici" (who could speak a bit of English) told me that he had NEVER done that and she was surprised to see him so happy! I took seriously ill on the last few days and he could see that...... I was all ready to jump into the pool and he run over and pulled me away saying "non non!!"...... he ushered me away from the pool, dragged a deck chair in my general direction and insisted that I lay on it.....he then said "You wait! I get Mastika!" He fukked off for about 40 minutes and, unbeknown to me, he had walked down the hill to buy me a half bottle of the local hooch "Mastika" and had struggled all the way back up the hill (and it was a MOTHER of a climb!!)...... he returned with a bottle of this stuff which I thought was local cough medicine, erm........ it was local but it certainly wasn't cough medicine, it nearly blew my brains clean out of my head! A couple of doses of that and I was all set (feeling great!) to get back into the pool........ I lit a fag up (pre diving into the water / as one does) and he ran over, grabbed my arm and took the fag out of my handing saying "No!"...... he put the fag in his own mouth, that was so good of him We both had so much in common, even though we couldn't communicate in "language" and the tears that we BOTH cried on the last day were genuine...... I will never forget that man. The poor bastard was on 50 Leva a week which equates to about £20 GBP per week and he LITERALLY gave me the shirt from his back...... that meant so much to me and was is the first time in my life that I cried with happiness. Anyhoo......... first length in over 30 years..... It's true what they say....... Use it or you'll lose it! FFS, I look like an old man doing an "economy" stroke...... that vid has really shown me what a sloth I have become, in every respect........ I doubt if I could save myself from drowning these days

(the coolest tourist ) Thanks for your good wishes Mike. I don't mind tourist locations at all. I just need to relax in a warmer place. I quite enjoy the buzz of a holiday destination although have always made sure we're not near, say, the Magaluf or Faliraki kind of place. When bringing up our kids we were always too poor to be able to consider an overseas hol. Both of us on non-professional wages coupled with a serious inability to manage our money well, going abroad was never a possibility. But, kids left home, we got a grip on our finances and I got a good early retirement deal. Now that I am ok to fly away for a break I still enjoy the sheer novelty of it - even after more than over a dozen sun and sand type holidays. We're all after different things huh? Finance-wise, I use my accounts spreadsheet which contains EVERY bit of income and expenditure I can imagine; it gives me a look ahead for the next 4 years, until after my 65th birthday (which is when my state pension kicks in). Every time we go out and buy something we hadn't planned on getting, I update the s/sheet to instantly see how it affects our savings plan in the long term! I got perilously close to bankruptcy. Never again. Now I never fear the postie :-) Went a bit off-topic there. Sorry. If it rains in Mallorca then we'll do a couple of trips; take some photos.
