I've been back in this shit hole (open prison / CCTV monitored state) they call the "UK" for 2 days Alex and the thought of a WEEK in this craphole, nanny state f**ked up SHIT hole of an over taxed bloody crap hole PRISON is enough to drive me insane! As soon as my house sells I am OUT of this place.... it has gone to the dogs. You know what I'm like when I get my mind into something....... the UK can stuff their "PC" (health and safety) shite right up their arse....... we are not free! This is not a democracy! The UK is the most UNFREE place in the world!!! We are caged animals who are led to believe we are free......... BOLLOCKS!!!! The UK is a nation of curtain twitchers and they hate seeing someone enjoy themself..... We are now being watched on CCTV by a "team" of watchers who are watching us for our own "health and safety"...................... BOLLOCKS!!! I am out of this rainy, gloomy craphole ASAP! FFS..... you can't even mow the grass in this place...... it's been pissing down for the past YEAR!!!!!! Beyond a joke. Mike.

You could come to the U.S. We have less surveillance (or it's more secret), but we have every citizen on the street bristling guns that the Army would be proud of. At least you're less likely to be robbed by some lowlife who needs a $50 coke fix.

When will you Yanks (mainly Republicans ?) get it that the rest of the civilised world doesn't want or need your stupid gun culture ? The Wild West days when you needed them to try and avoid being scalped are long gone. Al Capone and his boys are long gone too, and have been replaced by Corporate Criminals and self interest elected politicians who don't need guns to steal your money.

I'm sure you're familiar with the original 80's album Straight Outa Compton by NWA (Dr. Dre et al) .... well, they have a movie now and a new album. Not surprisingly, the album has many guest stars and expletives every other word (esp. the 'N' word). But what's interesting there is the intro, where Dre laments that Compton, like Carson and a few other surrounding villages, once was a suburban go-to-live for people who didn't want to live in the problem areas of Los Angeles, but now is overrun with crime and guns, but apparently, in spite of Dre's anti-police history, that change to Compton was the police's fault, not Dre's (given what Dre stands for).

Beyond a joke. Mike. Wow Mike, you did have a great holiday didn't you? Welcome back. England (and Scotland, and Wales) has wonderful scenery and some of the best beaches in the world. I'm thinking Harlech, Weymouth for a traditional sea-side, or Blackpool Sands in Devon (yes, there's a Blackpool in Devon) just to name a few of my favourites. But the weather ? ! When can you chance a drive to the beach in this country? I'm nearly two hours away from Harlech... you can't go on the off-chance. Since my sons have grown up and fled we've been able to afford holidays abroad. I'm not interested in culture, mountains, ancient castles or glorious (?) folk music. Nope, I go abroad to rent the sun, sea and sand for a week. Nothing more, nothing less. Trips out while on holiday I could count on the fingers of one hand. I'm proud to say I don't move from the sun-lounger. Reading, listening to music, sipping cold beer. Or maybe just sipping beer. That's what we do. Doesn't matter if it's Greece, Spain, Canaries, Balearics or Kath-ruddy-mandu. Give me sunshine all the while. My runner beans this year have been a waste of effort. Planted them late May during the great Spring we were having. June was a disaster and the plants didn't recover. All I want from my garden is runner beans. That's not asking much. Too cold to go into the garden let alone grow something. 'Struth.

naaaah, THISis a beach. Perranporth, Cornwall, UK. Or my localOrrrrrrrr, the 7 miles of golden sands than run from Burnham-on-Sea through to Brean Down. The Berrow section is possibly the nicest of it, that used to be my local in the UK. Only 10/15 minutes drive away and we went at least twice a month, all year round.

When I lived in the UK I ALWAYS hated coming back off holiday, it's not a back to reality thing, it's just the sh1tty UK. Here's a band's words I'm listening to at the moment that seem to fit; "In the dark satanic mills of progress. I'm a heathen searching searching for his soul."

Too cold to go into the garden let alone grow something. 'Struth. Derek, The UK is nothing more than a joke these days.... overrun by all sorts, taxed up to the eyeballs, our freedoms being eradicated by the second and to to add insult to injury, crap weather! It has been raining NON STOP all summer up here in Caithness and the average daily high has been about 13C, it has been absolutely horrendous with no sunshine at all..... just a relentless grey sky with no signs of any respite..... it's been like this the ENTIRE summer: www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gfmmrfsmsWinters up here are grim enough but to not have a summer? I ain't getting any younger and, as soon as the house sells, I am off to Bulgaria...... I will rent at first and get the feel of the place, say rent for 6 months, and then, if I like it will maybe buy a place. Then again, renting may be the best way to go long term as you don't have all the hassle of selling your house if you decide to move on. My house has now been on the market for two years and only 3 viewers!! It's a beautiful house BUT it's situated as far north as you can go without falling into the sea so not many takers for that type of setting. Anyhoo..... Bulgaria was a real eye opener (in a positive way) and I'll be over there at the first opportunity.... the UK has gone to dogs and they are welcome to it.

If they are so good, then where are all the surfers and families ? The map shows just the beaches in Sydney ALONE ! If any have seen the soapy "Home and Away", it is filmed at Palm Beach. www.discoversydney.com.au/maps/sydney_beach_map.gif

A bad beach "imo" is a beach jam packed full of half naked adults and their annoying offspring.

A couple of mile away from me........ MY idea of a decent beach! Hundreds of them up here and all of them unspoilt. Your idea of a good beach is a lot different from mine..... YMMV

Unlike those truly natural ones Mike linked to. The favourite single beaches in Cornwall for surfing are Fistral and Porthleven. Somewhere like Bude has many separate beaches with differing wave conditions. Perranporth has both rip-tides and a VERY fast inward tidal surge (one of the fastest in the UK, though not as dangerous as Portland Bill's (Dorset) "as fast as a galloping horse" tidal surge) making it unsuitable for casual swimmers and surfers. When it's near tide in time the life guards clear the entire wet section of the beach. It also has a submerged swimming pool that remains when the tide is out.

And nobody sunning themselves on them in just shorts or bikinis, because it' s too frigging cold ! Neither is there anyone in the water, except perhaps in a wetsuit, to cool down on a warm summer's day. Does the U.K. even have warm summer's days more than a couple of days a year ?

That is SO sad Derek.... you'd be as well spending two weeks on a sun bed. You could be right! On a serious note though, for most of my adult life I've suffered from a skin complaint. Nothing disfiguring I'm pleased to say, but I suffer from a lot of irritation. Sea water and a good dose of hot sun totally sort it out.

Perranporth during the lesser-spotted UK summer! Oh, I forgot to mention it also has a bar/restaurant actually on the beach called "The Watering Hole"

Look at the map of Sydney beaches that I linked to, and you will find heaps of the same from below Cronulla in the South, to Palm Beach in the North. There are many more good surfing beaches both south of Sydney, and North of Sydney, all the way up the North Coast, then the Gold Coast Beaches of Queensland. As for Manly, we also have a fabulous Manly Ferry trip from the heart of Sydney through Sydney's famous harbour directly to Manly Beach and Manly Cove which is a smaller children's type beach.
