Hi Mike just out of interest what solder do you use .. leaded / unleaded / silver etc etc looks like camera angle and a small reflection ?? Hi James, It was the camera angle / reflection...... just checked. The ONLY solder I use these days is Warton Metals "future" solder..... it's the dog's nads mate. Check out Warton metals website. I am 100% an advocate of using leaded solder, the lead free stuff is shite and "sounds" like shite due to the chemical interactions between the metals. Warton Metals "Future" solder is a dream to work with...... it floods into a pool if you so much as point a hair dryer in its general direction and it domes beautifully...... It flooded into the "Andante" heatsink retaining pads within 3 seconds with a tip temp. of 450c..... it's a superb solder to work with and I recommend it 101% What are you using Nick?

Just Youngsters: Sandy K. privately refers to me as the Ancient. I'm a young 78; at least I still have young ideas. I have a further mod. for you to try: 1. change R8 (emitter resistor) from 8.2 to 4.7 ohms 1 watt; benefit, increased drive for difficult phones (AKG K340). 2. Change opamp to LME 49860. 3. Change volco to valab 50k ladder attenuator, costs $28- + $5- shipping ( a bargain). Enter Ladder Attenuator, in search bar on ebay. Benefit: If the standard stepped attenuator is a choke point this should solve the problem, as only 2 resistors in ckt., at all times. Using this in my AKHA build, for that reason. 4. Change output devices from Tip 4- to 2SC5171. Benefit: The TIP's have a transition Freq. around 1.5 meghz. The 2SC5171 has a transition freq. around 200+ mghz. 5. Bump the voltage from +-15vdc to +-20vdc. When I did this to the SCHA; CJ said it was a blunderbuss improvemet.
NOTE: only the LME 49860 will work as it is rated +-22vdc. It is the same as the IC originally specified by Sandy K. for the SCHA, just a higher voltage rating. Really opens up the sound.
One problem with 2SC5171, none at stocking dealers in U.S. Sandy K. told me to order from UT Source, they have them in stock for a good price & quick delivery.
I will be interested in the results that anyone has with these mods. I will not be making another Chiara as I now have the improved SCHA & shortly the AKHA.
Best Bill Wilson

Oh Bollocks!! The enclosure arrived today and it has taken a bit of a beating in transit so I'll have to get them to send me a replacement front panel: That has now delayed the completion of this amp even further but these things happen The enclosure is almost perfect for the two boards, all of the holes are pre cut and it comes with an IEC fused socket, a switch, a volume knob, feet, a "Krell" plate, a cornucopia of extra screws / fitments and, all in all, taking the low price into consideration it's one helluva decent enclosure. I slapped the boards in to see what kind of room I had to play with and this will be pretty much perfect: Oh well........ I can put the amp together now and get it up and running with the damaged front panel in place but I won't consider it "complete" until the replacement front panel has been fitted/ I really do like the "screen" between the amp and PSU board, I don't normally like fitting amp and PSU in the same enclosure but this screen makes all the difference...... I'll rivet some pure copper sheet onto it too The knob that came with the enclosure is a classy number...... the one shown in the photo is poached from an MF V3 and not the knob that came with the enclosure...... I have plans for the knob that came with the enclosure which include visits to charity shops in search of cheap precious stones All will be revealed soon! I can never keep a secret so here's my thought process regarding the knob...... first of all, here is the knob that comes with the enclosure: Look at those deep holes on the knob...... they are crying out to be infilled with semi precious stones and you could do it for under a quid (a pound) if you find the right piece of costume jewellery in a local charity shop Approximately 10 years ago I called one of my WNA MKl amps the "Amethyst"....... The knob was poached from a 1970's Pioneer tuner that I got free from a local skip and the "amethyst" was prised out of a piece of costume jewellery that cost me 10 pence from a charity shop...... it turned a bog standard hammond enclosure into something that looked a little bit "different" and all it cost was ten pence I then cut a hole in the top of the enclosure and added a bit of aluminium body repair mesh (10 pence again)....... I still think it looks quite nifty to this day considering it only cost twenty pence and a bit of imagination There is nothing worse than not being able to add your own individuality to a DIY kit build and it's the little personal touches that I like doing the best. Anyhoo...... I better stop typing as I am sure Nick is chomping at the bit to display his "ready made" uber expensive / massive boutique knob Mike.

I'm pretty pissed off with my choice of enclosure as the advert "kinda" indicated that the it was NOT pre-drilled...... it turns out that it IS pre-drilled and comes with everything it says it doesn't ') I did a "dry" fit this morning and a stepped attenuator is out of the equation if I want to utilise the aluminium screen (which I do)........ I had to refit the alu screen and it left me with about 2mm clearance for a blue velvet (RK27) pot. The machined holes are FANTASTIC but you have to fit the boards to suit them....... I was very lucky achieving that 2mm clearance and a measuring tape and sharp drill bit came to the rescue I'm quite happy with the "dry" fit and as soon as the new front panel arrives I'll get this completed...... got some nice "jewels" for the knob when I was in town (£6.00 for assorted costume jewellery from local charity shops) so looking forward to messing around with my knob. 25c in far North Scotland today..... where the fekk did that come from? My arse cheeks are sweating, I think it's time to lose the long Johns Just awaiting the replacement front panel and I'll get this puppy wired up..... all seems good to go. They say it's going to be 22C up here tomorrow so I'll be off the radar (being eaten alive by midges and harvest flies) enjoying a day in the natural warmth of the orange thing in the sky

Please remember that my build "examples" are for beer and pie type builders who want to put something decent together without the champagne and caviare entry fee.......... Maximum bang for the buck being the ideal finished product. Mike.

Perhaps you shouldn't have sent Nick those JLH PCBs, but it doesn't look like you have much space to fit them anyway ? (grin)

Mike
please don't be so sad .. the competition is not over yet ..
your case looks great and I am sure your will get it how you want it etc ... from all the the pics I have seen every thing looks sweet and dandy !!
I will post my pics Wednesday as in the middle of some tree pruning at the moment, from my point of view I had already decided that you had won the competition .. based on purely passion and enthusiasm for your contributions that you have made so far and your wonderful web site
Chin up mate .. people like us are in the minority these days and I really look forward to reading your postings
Happy building ..... live long and prosper !!!
speak soon mate ... off to my shed for more drilling and filing and making holes .. you are a inspiration to us all and I have learnt so much from your web site (hints and tips etc)
keep those pork pies as I think as yet we don't have a clear winner yet .. if it was not for your web site I would not have bothered in the 1st place .. well done to you mate .. you have provided the ripple of inspiration to us to all and keep those soldering irons on, and have another go tomorrow.
we all get down in our builds as we both seek perfection .. which we both know is not possible, perfection = depression as my counselor tells me .. so lets have fun with our builds to encourage others and the viewers
happy days mate
pics being uploaded ......

Mike. we are both winners you send me the finest pie . .and I will send you one from the finest in essex Hi Nick, Thanks for the kind words last night, that was very good of you. They don't really make pork pies up here but they do make the finest steak pies you will ever taste..... the pies are PACKED with steak and the steak is so tender that it melts in the mouth....... would you maybe prefer a prize winning haggis instead, or maybe a Stornoway black pudding? Looking forward to seeing your enclosure Nick and will get ready to doff my cap in your general direction Who is James Feline? It says on your other amp "James Feline & co"........... do you own a pet food company or something? Mike.

Hi Mike oohh love Stornoway black pudding or steak pie would you like a essex pork pie .. we have a awarding winning butchers in Rayleigh high street .. I will pop one in the post with terminal blocks that you wanted To be absolutely frank Nick...... I am not a pork pie man and I detest "pastry" of any sort........ I'd eat a pork pie when I'm pished but it's not normally something I'd normally eat....... There's a wee shop in Thurso that gets a regular supply of Charles MacLeod black puddings so I'll send you one of those: www.charlesmacleod.co.uk/home.aspx That will travel well whereas a MacDonald's of Wick or Reid's bakery (Thurso) steak pie really needs to be eaten at source to appreciate the succulent, tender, flavoursome Scottish steak. It's off the map up here Nick and it's like stepping back 500 years in time..... no crime, everybody knows one another, you can go on holiday and leave your door open safe in the knowledge that your house and contents will be intact when you return...... no parking fees, no traffic wardens, no police on the streets, no speed cameras....... old school freedom. No "ASDA", no "B&Q", no "MacDonalds", no "KFC", no "Starbucks"....... none of that shit up here son, I have to travel 130 miles south if I want to eat a "big Mac"..... a 7 hour round trip to eat "street food" thrown at me in a polystyrene container. I wouldn't mind an Essex girl..... do you have any of them going spare? Ideally, she should be young, naive, gorgeous looking, good at ironing (in the nude), tolerant of the occasional slap, good at gardening, a keen cook, willing to pleasure at short notice, into kinky stuff, partial to a bit of role play, happy to sleep in her own bedroom and only be allowed into mine when I beckon her in for sex, keep her mouth SHUT when I'm with my friends, keep her mouth SHUT at all times unless it's in my bedroom where she will be encouraged to moan and express her emotions and "issues"........... I'm a good listener Anyhoo..... If you can't sort me out an Essex wench then an "award winning" pork pie will have to do, I may grow to love it. Mike.

Please, whatever you do, don't send me up a local Essex Muslim girl........ I'm not into that "fully clothed / caped" kinky Allah "angry sex" stuff and I like to wake up in the morning with my head fully intact on my shoulders.
Mike.
