Never used a vacuum based machine. Cleaned all many hundreds of albums with two Knosti's. Used a mixture of white vinegar with a drop of windscreen wash as a wetting agent in the first bath, followed by a rinse under the tap. Then a second bath of distilled water to wash the tap water off. Took forever and a day but I enjoyed doing it. Put the records in new sleeves and they still seem clean a couple of years later. I never use the ubiquitous carbon fibre brush anymore either.

We had a LP cleaner at the store which saw regular use. At home I've only ever used a carbon brush, being firmly in the camp that the stylus does the deep cleaning and then keep your stylus clean.

All albums new or old have mold release agent on them so they need cleaning, considering some record cleaning machines can cos up to £3.000 and over i think £200 is a steal, using your needle to trough through the shite in the grooves will wear your stylus quicker I clean them and then rinse them in distilled water, and suck 99.9% of the water up then put them in one of the nosti racks for half an hour Then in to mobile fidelity/nagoka sleeves Hey Nigel have you tried georges record shop in tulketh st, went there a few weeks ago and bought some nice near mint vinyl for cheap prices Paddy

Yes, I know George's Records very well! He needs to sort the shop stock out doesn't he? It's too cramped, one can hardly move down the aisles. How many records do you reckon he has there? Many, many thousands.

I had an old haunt like that when I lived in Surrey. Langley Records in West Molesey, fantastic place back then but I've heard they have turned more to CD now?

There must be thousands of records in that shop I got a mate of mine a near mint copy of Alchemy by dire straits for £4 I have Georges tel number to check he,s open, going there in a couple of weeks Back to the record cleaning machine, I think £200 is cheap considering it could cost you £3 a record for a cleaning service from record shops Joined discogs recently, can be expensive but good for some rare stuff, bought a mint jap copy of Dsom by Floyd, complete with obi and inser. Chris,
I would dispense of the carbon fibre brush. I used a Hunt EDA for years, much better results with one of those microfibre clothes, especially when sprinkled with distilled water. Fabulous.

Nigel, we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Even with distilled water they are prone to leaving increased static on the record being made of synthetic fibres. I'm still using my Hunt EDA (have a small stock of them from retailing days). Which reminds me of silly names for some of the reps that came around; Darth from Path Diamond geeza The bleeder from Veda but best of all, the $@#t from Hunt!

Many say this is a game changer on the P2.

, but if the machine commands £200?! Is it really worth it? If you are going to build your LP collection from second hand purchases it may well be, many 2nd hand LPs can be quite grubby with a nice, scratch free surface below the muck. You can do the job manually as detailed in previous posts above, if you have the time and inclination.

I have been cleaning my LP's with the spray you use for computer screens. It is very successful at removing dust, and I don't play them until the day after I've cleaned them.

Whatever works best for you. It's a lot of fun experimenting with different methods to achieve the best results anyway. Just don't use things like lighter fuel. We had a second hand record shop in our town years ago, they used a cloth drenched in lighter fuel to clean LP's. Made them shine but introduced surface noise. I've tried a lot different methods over the last 38 years, even placed a few in our dishwasher once!

I got it a long while ago and it was in a bit of disrepair when I took it over. In getting it up and running again, VpI was very helpful in instructing me on how it works and what to replace and such..nice company. For me...it's cleaning power and the resulting effects it garnered on my 60's records was a revelation. There is much, much more music in those grooves, guys. All the cliché's apply, such as, dynamics, instrument separation, intensity, coherence, quality of timbre...etc. It provided a major improvement on what I "thought" was an excellent vinyl LP playback system. I clean in batches and make an afternoon of it as it's a big-un and very heavy and I live in tight quarters and fitting it onto my kitchen counter and setting up the production line takes time and space. It's a motorized unit for all functions and it really does dry the LP's pretty well...besides it's difficult to wait before hearing how good, say, "Highway Knees" on Tanx by T-Rex (the original) sounds...Bolan's creaky vibrato and all. Once you hear the diff it's even more diff to do without. Oh yeah, VpI fluid...

Hope he finds the strength to move if proposed plans succeed. Don't want to lose another. If interested please see my thread in this "Spin It" discussion board...."48 year old LP" for my trip to a local shop and fantastic "find". I'm just now listening to another from that batch of 13...a Berlioz "Romeo and Juliet Symphony" on Columbia Special Products Label from 1956, I believe. Marvelous stuff.....
