It must be hard if you're not the right colour or ethnic group.
It must be very hard.
I know that because I'm not the wrong colour nor is my ethnic group out of kilter with the western world. I am white (well, an off pink/peach colour really), I am classed as C of E for the sake of the authorities, I am a British Citizen and I have a current legally obtained passport to prove it, My parents and their parents, and their parents, as far back as I know were all British citizens too.
However, since last November I have felt like an outlaw in this western world of ours. First my Dad died (no violins please) and his estate was immediately investigated for fraud by UK Gov dept for work and pensions - not proved I got to keep his hard earned pension he'd saved and left to me - a mere pitance compared to some (he was only a mine worker who'd daily risked his life swimming underground, underwater and in total darkness to pump out a half mile deep coal mine so UK Gov could keep their pit running).
I'd known about RoHS, but hadn't realised how crap such components would perform until recently when UK Gov approved kite marked suppliers decided to release them. RS have still to complete with only 2 weeks to go!
Anyway, that meant I work my butt off or go bust by UK Gov default.
Then I discovered UK Gov and Europe were treating me and everyone else as mushrooms over WEEE.
By working 100+ hours a week I've just about overcome that, so worry no more?
Just around the corner I find another devil - California!
And we all know who that means - Asta la vista baby!!!
He's trying to bust me too! The rich guy pissing on the poor guy again (No, I'm not that millionaire from Barnsley - I'm working class!)
But you Californian residents voted for him! An actor!!!
What's he done to me? He's banned my work! Linear power supplies have been ripped out of the history books. I'm an analogue engineer Arnie! Not a bloody digital gutter snipe!
Linears make audio sound good - switch mode does NOT!
So Arnie has shown just how much musical taste he has, and you and I are going to suffer for it because the world is following their hero. Australia for one! I'm banned there too.
I may as well be a Brazilian running for a train, or a hard working Hindu. My country and it's allies show no respect for hard work and comittment anymore. You Mr Public don't see it yet, but you will - you will.
So why do I continue running GSPL with so much stacked against me and the audio industry in general? For the music, and to do what is honourable - to look after my family - period.
But to Mr Blair, European leaders, Mr Bush and Mr Schwarzenegger, I'm shit on the bottom of their boots. Respect for hard work took the last train for the coast, no matter what colour you are.
No I'm not inciting anyone to do anything - I'm just telling it as it is. You'd better get used to it. It's going to get worse before it gets any better.

We also just discovered hurricanes and tropical storms over here in the states just in the last year or so. Before that it was always 76-80F with zero humitdity, maybe a cool breeze of 5MPH at the shore and the sun was always shining. No rain,no cold,no darkness,no strong winds, tornadoes a thing only in books and hurricanes something to scare little children with so they will go to sleep. "better go to sleep right now or the bad old hurricane will come in your room and scoop you right up" nothing but Otis Redding (Dock Of The Bay) from coast to coast year 'round .......until GLOBAL WARMING reared its ugly head and made balmy weather a memory and in its place "variable" or "iffy" entered into our vocabulary !!!!!!!!!! no longer can we expect perfect weather or thinking humans but must instead GUIDE those poor misguided souls as if children for they know not what they do and without laws to protect them may walk off a cliff or something ! ;D Certain elements are using scare tactics to change the face of commerce knowing no matter what havic they bring on the rest of us they will be just fine having enough money to buy their way out of any un popular laws or which allow certain parties unfair trade advantages. If history has taught me anytying it is the "haves" will always get what they want while passing laws to take the very same things away from the have nots and any who bitch either pay such heavy finacial penalties they risk ruin or in extreme cases end up in prison for breaking the law while those who write the law break the same with impunuty. same old story just with different names and dates Since according to some the world is doomed (or at least safe from affordable quality audio, same thing really ) I guess it is time to build that Ark only mine will not be animals 2x2 but me and a damn harem so I can repopulate the planet in my image ! A world where up is still up and sideways is horizontal not this "no matter what you THINK you see or hear THIS is what you really hear and see" world of misdirection power plays where smake and mirrors with a dash of pure bulshit rules the day SS Rick ! All oars in the water, music in the lounge area, dancing 'til dawn....clothing optional

I had to google about the linear PS affair since I had never heard about it before. The opposite of the good nowadays isn't the obviously evil but the "meant to be good". Any of these ecological blunders seems to be reasonable but has some nasty side effects. California Energy Commission, European Commission, whenever you read "Commission" you know you are in trouble. At least we do have an easily identifiable target for the next revolution. Past civilizations fell as a result of natural disasters or attacking barbarian hordes. We might fall due to commissions indirectly elected by us. Not with a bang but a whimper. Step by step. It's depressing. And hilarious. Graham might get away with calling his amps dual use weapons. Usually the military is suspended from unpractical blunders. The new Graham Slee "shocker": Sounds good at low volume for the audiophile and is a very effective torturing instrument at max volume for treating the Guantanamo bay prisoners. Couldn't resist.I have to laugh about it or I'd need lots of antidepressants. Seriously, Graham, I hope you'll find a way to circumvent the mess and to survive economically.

We've just got a big Nexus power amplifier in at work, and that has a switched power supply. It has roughly the same output power specs as my big linear-transformered one at home, but weighs 7kg (15lbs) instead of 16kg (35lbs). I'm going to ask if I can borrow it over a weekend so I can compare the two.
For big, powerful amplification that has to be moved around a lot (ie. for powering a bass guitar rig like mine), I can see the weight advantages being pretty attractive, but if it sounds rubbish I don't want one. The damping factor is much worse than mine, I know that for a start.
I'd eventually like an Ashdown PM-1000 or AL-1500D amplifier, and they use separate linear toroidals for each channel. They also weigh 34kg (75lbs).
If I get the chance to A-B the one from work with mine, I'll let you know what I think. Be aware that mine cost £200 and the one from work £550, so if that actually translates into quality, it might bias things slightly.

Indeed! The Solo "shocker" could double up as a torture device used by the Metropolitan "police"... instead of breaking innocent people's doors down and shooting them at point blank range they could go in in "stealth mode" when the people are asleep and strap a headset onto innocent members of the public and torture them for 72 hours with 130db of Britney Spears.
You can just imagine the headlines:
Terror suspect Abdul Smith talks of the moment when police stormed his house and strapped him into the controversial "Slee Shocker" Abdul says:
"It was terrible, I was fast asleep and all of a sudden was awoken by the "Britney Spears" singing loud in my ears "Oh baby, baby How was I supposed to know That something wasn't right here Oh baby, baby" I was strapped on my bed for 72 hours and I thought the nightmare would never end. The Slee "shocker" kept pumping this loud western music into my head "ooh Baby baby" I still can't think straight 6 weeks after the event, this device has rendered me insane "oooh baby baby" "hit me one more time mama" I shall be sueing both the police and the maker of this evil device ooooh baby baby, hit me with it one more time!"

This new trend towards "Green" electronics is fine for cell phones or data entry devices such as computers or organizers but when you lump everything under a single umbrella without consideration for end use you end up with inferior goods. Even without the new rules the focus was on smaller/lighter/cooler in the portable consumer electronics arena so no laws were needed to FORCE a technology because there was already a need based on end use. Due to energy costs and size the home computer industry was aslo on a path to energy efficient and again here it makes sense. Processors run hot, additional features use more and more power which again=more power =more heat. Smaller sizes combined with the above mean design headaches without the resources to attack the problem and why you no longer see small companies producing competitive goods but only large coirporations cornering the marketplace. So with RoHs already a success story from the radicals whatr is left other than "Eco Freindly" for ALL aspects of consumer electronics no matter what the end use and if not only does quality of product suffer but peformance as well ? Hell they cost pennies on the dollar anyway so just chuck the old and in with the new right ? So what is next now that RoHs is settled law ? www.elecdesign.com/Articles/ArticleID/12134/12134.hml"The EU’s Directive 2005/32-EC on eco-design of energy-using products (known as EuP) doesn’t actually place binding requirements on specific products. But it does define conditions and criteria regarding environmentally relevent product characteristics, such as energy and material consumption. " The only reason THIS is not yet the law of the land is just like before with roHs the big guns are not yet ready. One the Panasonics, the Phillips, the Sonys and the Intels have this nailed, nailed because they have the resources,it WILL become law and then it will be up to anyone NOT in the above annointed group to either play catch up or just go away and will again favor the "haves" who are really the engine behind the radicals. Trust me,if they thought these things bad for business they would be spending their loot attacking the laws instead of pre-positioning for market dominance even better "All manufacturers are working to eliminate toxic substances and reduce the amount of materials from their products. Several consumer electronics companies are also experimenting with biodegradeable materials for use in their products"imagine, electronic "hard goods" with a shelf life closer to a loaf of bread than anything made to actually last " Tom Dunne, the deputy assistant administrator for solid waste and emergency response at the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA), told an audience at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the EPA is encouraging DfE. He also described the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT), which was designed specifically for evaluating the environmental performance of electronic products throughout their life cycle to help meet the growing demand by large institutional purchasers to buy greener products. "and "Dunne expects EPEAT to be accepted as an industry standard later this year. EPEAT rates performance in eight categories of product performance: reduction/elimination of environmentally sensitive materials, materials selection, design for end-of-life, life-cycle extension, energy conservation, end-of-life management, corporate performance, and packaging.
Much of the criteria for EPEAT were drawn from existing U.S. and international standards such as Energy Star, RoHS, the IT-Eco Declaration, and the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA). The criteria will be reviewed and updated periodically. At last count, 14 federal agencies and several states had signed on to use the tool in their future electronic purchases, including computers, laptops, and communications equipment.' The ipod generation strikes again ! The same crew that swears MP3 sounds as good as a CD and who has never heard anything remotely resembling good sound will force the rest of us into their world view the same way the 'few" always have controlled the "many" BY LAW ! Do as I say or go to jail

"The engines on three 747s put out as much power as a nuclear power plant" see www.technologyreview.com/read_article.aspx?id=13865&ch=infotechApproximately 180 747's take off from LA international each day That equates to 60 power stations in the air above California each day. If you put a power amp in a greenhouse on a hot day, will it get hotter than what it was designed for? The centre of the earth is molten. If it gets hotter will the molten volume grow? If it did, would there be more earthquakes? Would there be more volcanic eruptions? Burning fossil fuels in 747's and other jet engines causes CO2 to build-up in the upper atmosphere CO2 is a greenhouse gas. It stops the natural cooling of the planet. Normally CO2 is balanced by rainfall - it washes it back into the ground. So all it has to do is rain and the CO2 output from power plants is balanced - you see CO2 is slightly heavier than air. If it comes from ground level, it simply can't get in the upper atmosphere to cause any trouble. It cannot rain upwards above the clouds where the CO2 from jet engines hangs around falling ever so slowly the average 6 miles to earth What then is causing global warming? A handful of power stations making power to run linear power supplies? Or is it the equivalent of 1,000's of power stations in the sky called jet engines? Of course it's the jet engines, but the planet has to be destroyed for our convenience in getting around while blaming anything else that's convenient. Let's face it, Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't going to be alive when the planet blows up! Politicians don't give a damn about our children's children, or they'd be doing something about air-travel. Either that or they're just plain dumb. It's all about conserving precious oil and nothing to do with environmentally positive actions You've been had! G

Hey! This is silly Last week on Radio 4 (intellectuals channel here in England), it was either the food program or the farming program, I can't remember. Farmers in the UK are going green by stopping Cows farting! They think the methane from Cows is causing climate change - silly buggers! When every other village round here had a giant coal mine with fan-houses pumping out methane gas by the ton, we had great weather. The summers were perhaps a degree or so cooler, but lasted weeks and we had snow in the winter. When it got cloudy it rained. Plus there were no water shortages! If it hailed things got very wet with the melt. Now all the mines are shut. Thatcher closed them in the 80's. Instead of mines we've got Airports - 4 of them all within 30 miles of my place. We live under a constant cloud of Carbon Dioxide. Now it hails CO2 - you know that because 5 minutes afterwards the ground is dry. THE HAIL IS PREDOMINANTLY DRY ICE! That's frozen CO2! From where? JET ENGINES! Anybody listening! Or have you all died from asphyxiation? G

I for one would not mind that if the often forecast San Andreas Fault Line finally making the Arizona Desert beach front property finally came to pass (California slipping out to sea or under it ). Whatever the radicals in California do eventually spreads to the entire rest of my country as SET LAW which sounds good on paper, always does, but in actual every day life become no more than more shackles on the American people while the states get richer by having more and more "hidden" taxes on the common working folk. The automobile emissions testing is one such fiasco that became no more than another "probable cause" to pull over automobiles so the Gestapo could check for drugs or any other illicit activity, the seat belt law was the first along those lines with more to come. Of course it is for our own good and they are the adults and we the population misguided children so we NEED to be told what to do or we would all be lost Your EU is our California and my once "land of the free" has become "do as I say or go to jail".Pompous elitist bastards never going after any REAL problems because to do so would be hard work so instead they pass silly little laws then go to dinner parties so they can pat one another on the back and tell each other how they are saving the world...................then jump in the 8 miles to the gallon SUV,ride to the airport, jet across the big pond in their jet,get picked up by the limo and go to another dinner party looking to ally themselves with some "new world order" international body of baby sitters because in their mind the "masses" are just so many misguided children and NEED to be forced into doing the right thing by the anointed. Someone needs to save the planet alright, from the elite liberal bastards trying to fk it up in the name of saving it If only. Then it would be easy to dismiss them so that not being the case I can only think it is either A-they believe their own propaganda or B-they truly are self loathing and hating themselves hate everyone else and want to see humanity punished for some misdeed only they know about C-they get better drugs than most Group A-trying to find ways to use methane gas as a cheap energy solution. We even have "shit farmers" in the colonies stockpiling SHIT while their in house scientists look for ways to make this into a cheap, obviously renewable energy source which in liquid form can be pumped as a petroleum products are presently. Group B-Blaming global warming on methane gas as if this is a man made thing not seen on the planet before.I guess formerly animals had no ass and since they had no ass could neither fart or shit with the result they had to be light eaters and breed fast because once they reached critical mass........ BLAMMO !Cows exploding ! Not pretty, not pretty at all. "what we need to do Festus is plug up the ass of all mammals over one foot long because if we do not all this crapping and farting will be the end of humanity" My question is,if methane gas so dangerous and with the liberals so full of shit is it not them causing the problem by spewing so much bullshit and not the common barnyard animal ? Humanity needs to get a fkn grip before they totally lose it and in the process of saving the planet destroy humankind.Something many openly espouse anyway thinking the planet is better off without us and what is really behind some of the insanity It is the cow farts ! Those not yet flat out killed by this deadly gas are so brain damaged to answer would be an impossibility.Damn good thing those in charge, our baby sitters have built up a resistance to this gas or we would all be in serious trouble...or is that doo doo...or wait maybe..........
