I appreciate that this forum is primarily for discussions about audio (should have been called audio grotto actually) but I much prefer a more diverse approach of general interests. After all once one has told the others their equipment, they then seem to be down an intellectual dead end. So I will tell the members (the 10 who visit daily) about my equipment and then go on to other things which I like. In the absense of a more ordered structure for topics, I will just keep all my entries in this one place. After all it is set aside for;
'general chat anything goes'
It's my hope that a broader interest base will result in a better following of the site and not just the 10 or so chums who are resistant to change. Of course this may be exactly what the creator wanted, in which case simply terminate my membership and I will pass on to my 200 or so site friends that this site is for the 10 audio chums alone.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not interested in upsetting anyone, just giving you an outsider perspective. I have recieved nothing but adverse criticisms since joining this site and fortunately I don't take anything written on the internet too seriously (as some do). I have never joined a site in which a general welcome was not extended. Neither have I joined one without a structured introduction with rules of do's and don'ts. Maybe that is intentional, the clique can criticise when a new person joins and have a jolly laugh between themselves.
I hope some of you are bigger than that!
So I will do my collumn (if Permitted) and we will see how it goes.

On the turntable today I listened to Rudolph Friml's conducted version of the Chocolate Soldier. image hosting servicesA gorgeous little Operetta, this version recoded in 1963 on the World Record Club label. Give it a listen, it's superb verdict *****

Here is my listening room, showing my audio equipment. imgurl I love the colour scheme, it's very progressive Rox........ you obviously took inspiration from your listening room when designing the "skin" for your "soldaten der prog" joint...... 43 members eh? You really know your onions when it comes to pulling a crowd in Major Lord Roxbrough, I think we should really start taking notice of you because you are obviously going to go global with your wonderful selection of "skins": Thank you ever so much for introducing yourself, I haven't had such a good laugh in many many years

With the deepest of respect, the colour scheme of your "club" is a fekkin' eyesore. I had a brief 5 minute look at your forum but couldn't manage any longer because I started to feel dizzy (seriously)..... Why do you think newspapers have been white background / black text since day one? It's simple..... it's because it makes reading the content a lot easier on the eye. Red and a type of "swamp" shade of green is a colour clash and certainly not a co-ordination: The text on your forum is almost impossible to read..... fortunately, most of the posts are one liners and can be deciphered without too much straining but if anybody wrote more than three sentences the reader would fall off his chair with a feeling of vertigo! WTF?! I have taken your comments on board Rox but the proof of the pudding dictates that you are not the "go to" man when it comes down to colour co-ordination or "skins". Feel free to camp out here (if you can live with the easy to read text) but please get your own house in order before commenting on other people's colour schemes. I'll be more than happy to give you advice on running a successful (global) forum and can also advise you that it takes a lot of your personal time and dedication and the moment you don't have the time to dedicate it soon starts failing....... 8 years ago this was "possibly" the best audio forum in the world and the input from fellow enthusiasts was incredible..... you found this place with ease so you know how well it is indexed by Google, under most keyword search terms it comes up in the top ten nine times out of ten and mostly at number one / page one. There is 14 years worth of content within these walls...... I suggest you dig a bit deeper into the archives to see what jewels are hidden within, you will be very surprised indeed. The site has, essentially, become an archive / a reference point but if a few of us become passionate (once again) we can easily, as a joint force, get the joint jumping once again. You have to appreciate that there is a time and place in life and nothing remains constant...... change happens, people's interests change and the "I want to share this idea with the world" you may have today will not be the same idea you want to share 10 years later. I really (really) do appreciate your contribution to Rock Grotto and hope that is helpful to somebody out there in no mans land BUT we will not be redecorating the joint any time soon....... all that's required here is some black on white / interesting textual intercourse. Pinkie.

I have NEVER had somebody enter my house, as a guest, "without so much as a by your leave", and criticise my decor, my furnishings and my general persona...... please excuse all of us here for not welcoming you with open arms..... The first "rule" of "don'ts" is "think before you speak"...... the second rule is "don't piss on your own leg".... the third rule is "don't piss your host off to the degree that he may punch you in the face"....... quite simple rules to follow?

I was also curious about the main portal style door to the kitchen. Did you add the kitchen on to the back of the house? Did you do it yourself?
Also that avatar of yours, although a British citizen do you have an eastern european bloodline?
Fascinating stuff. PinkFloyd's right, speak to us, you now have our attention. No one liners or spurious posts, tell us something meaty that your passionate about and can articulate.
p.s. I think Spongebob should be wearing one of those military helmets.

We had a gas fire like that in our last house. Fantastic, totally fit for purpose. A great heater for sure.

Yes, that's what they used to tell us as well. We just have a gas fire that looks like a coal fire now. Rarely put it on, not surprising as the central heating seems to be on all day.

My Auntie used to have one of them back in the 70's and it sure did give out a decent amount of heat...... she would make a pot of tea and then sit it in front of the fire to keep it warm..... she was real old school and had a woolen tea cosy for the teapot but her tea was like gnats pish, she only put one teabag in the teapot. If I'm having tea I like it really strong, 2 teabags in a mug, water first / remove teabags and then add milk. These people who add the milk when the teabag is still in the cup are damned philistines.... it totally ruins the fine detail of the tea.

Heard a view recently which said tea should be made with water that's just off the boil, as with coffee. Have tried it and it's fine. Mike? Derek

Derek I normally make it with water that is actually bubbling when it goes into the cup Derek but I'll try it with slightly off the boil water and will report back. I also warm my cup with boiling water / throw the water in the sink and then add the teabag to the warm cup.... seems to improve things..... much the same as heating your teapot up.

Do you stir the teabag whilst it's in the cup or just remove after a couple of minutes? I sometimes put the milk in first, I very much doubt I could tell the difference under blind testing conditions. This might be mad but I reckon tea tastes better in the china type cups / mugs over the thicker types.

Just incase anybody would like to emulate Rox's listening room here is a list of essential items to ensure the acoustics are spot on: I am so grateful for this guide to Rox's room Mike. I'm a bit worried about having a sword in the room. Mainly because it might resonate at certain frequencies. Maybe Rox can offer advice about damping and so on. Regarding Tea Bags, I am astonished that people of good taste like Mike (for example) should use Tea Bags. They are usually mostly powder if I remember correctly. You need proper tea leaves to make a decent cup of tea. There should be a law against tea bags. Maybe we can get the EU to ban them.
