I've got a Samsung series 7 LED TV, in the bedroom, which has fantastic picture quality but the sound quality is pretty flimsy due to the small speakers that have to be fitted into these ultra slim panels. I was thinking of attaching its output to an amp and pair of speakers but really don't want all that hardware and wires in the bedroom. These soundbars / soundbases seem to get a pretty decent write up so I've ordered the Maxell MXSP SB3000 soundbase in the hope that it will give me an added bit of punch without having to go down the amp and separate speakers route.
There are plenty of reviews on the Maxell MXSP SB3000 and I'll do one of my own once the bad boy is installed (hopefully receive it on Thursday. It will be interesting to strip it down and see what (if anything) can be done to improve the performance. I'd imagine there can be a fair bit done to it and it would be enjoyable to work on as it is an amp and speakers all in the one enclosure. Without even seeing it I am already thinking about flash banding the inside of the enclosure, fitting decent quality electronic parts and swapping the SMPS out for a linear / regulated type (if there's enough room inside).
It appears to be a fair slab of wood for the money and I doubt it will be crammed to bursting point with components so....... there should be some room for a regulated supply, a ripple eater and a few other goodies
Here is the Maxell MXSP SB3000: www.trustedreviews.com/maxell-mxsp-sb3000_Surround-Sound-System_review There are no internal shots that I can find on the net so the first thing I will do, before connecting it to the TV, is pop the hood and take a load of internal shots and hopefully follow through with some modifications which will turn this very reasonably priced hulk of thing into a true giant killer in the world of soundbars
Do any of you guys have any experience of soundbars, do you use one with your flat panel TV?
Not everybody has a headphone amp, not everyone has a CD player, not everyone listens to Music but everybody on the planet (unless they live in a cave or an extremely deprived area) has a TV so this could prove to be a very popular thread and something which the headphone amp / power supply and speaker tweaker / DIY'er will also be very interested in.
You know, the thought of discussing, yet another, headphone amplifier is what has kept me away so long...... There is a limit to the amount of times you can comment on "much the same as the last" over and over again without going absolutely mad! Sometimes, in life, you need to take a step back and go sniff the roses for a while and, hopefully, return from your "gap year" with a different view and new ideas. No point in coming back and doing the same thing if you are STILL feeling a lack of interest is there?
I am still passionately involved with headphone amps / music / power supplies / upgrades etc. but not at the level I was a few years ago where I would sit up until 3am in the morning passionately discussing all things audio and helping people to get involved in our universal love of music and helping them get the best from their equipment. I've gone more "back burner" the past few years and, to be quite frank, I think it was the best place to be as somebody who lives and breathes headphone amps day and night has got a serious problem
There is so much more to life than "unboxing" a headphone amplifier and extolling its virtues (or shortcomings) to the world time and time again, over and over again to the degree that you are over exposed with "products" and it becomes, ever increasingly, a chore rather than a passion.
For the first time in a good few years, I am looking FORWARD to receiving this, seemingly, non interesting soundbase and am looking forward to playing about with it..... I don't know "why" but this lump of wood is something that I am looking forward to receive and that's a first, for me, this year........ You wouldn't believe the amount of headphone amp "samples" I have declined this year (HEED Canalot being the most recent) This is the first time, in a long time that I want to test a product and PAY for it with my own hard earned money.
I know that a few of you will think I am "mad" declining free samples of headphone amps from all and sundry BUT I can sleep at nights and am not obliged to say that everything is great in the world
Mike.
