Ok, so let's assume I had some prosumer device like for example a Behringer SRC2496 or a random USB audio interface with balanced i/o, be it XLR or TRS (and assuming standard configuration with pin one being shield/chassis ground), which I'd like to integrate into a hifi system with unbalanced i/o via RCA/Cinch preferably without using trannies/di boxes. Commercial adaptors for that purpose typically seem to be configured RCA signal to Hot and RCA ground to both Cold and shield/chassis ground, but I wonder, whether that actually is a pretty universally safe and sensible way to do it. Because another alternative would seem (of course using a twinax instead of regular coax cable then) to connect RCA signal to Hot, RCA ground to Cold and connect the shield only on the balanced end to shield/chassis ground.
So which way would you guys deem better - and why? Or any other suggestions?
Greetings from Munich!

I am not exactly sure what the question is... There is only one correct way to connect balanced xlr to single end rca... and you need twin axial shielded. Positive is pin2 always, on the rca side negative together with shielding, on the xlr side negative on pin 3 and shielding on pin 1...

Well, for one thing, if shield/chassis ground and Cold are hooked together, I don't really see the need for using a twinax cable. And then it also seems questionable, whether hooking shield/chassis ground and Cold together is such a good idea at all. Because some experts claim that especially for balanced out- to unbalanced input that standard configuration can even be very bad idea, especially if the outsputs are not short circuit proof. Manufacturer Rane for example instead suggests what I already described above and what you can see under #17 and #18 over there: www.rane.com/note110.html, i.e. not hooking shied/chassis ground and Cold together and instead connecting the cable shield to shield/chassis ground on the balanced end only. However, I'm not really familiar with all the different variants of balanced i/o ports and not such an electronics expert anyway, and so I wonder about the pros and cons of those different ways of connection especially regarding compatibility with different types of balanced i/o implementations. So I had hoped that some of the electronics experts on Rock Grotto might be able to shed some more light on that topic for me... Greetings from Munich! Manfred / lini
