185 vs. 195€ normal price... 5.2% discount, not bad but not terrific IMHO

I prefer the slight softer treble attack of the K601 but that is a good price for the 701. In fact, I use the K601 as a reference headphone since it is very flat in frequency response and is pretty amazing for a cheap headphone.

I paid mine €250 at Thomann about 2 years ago (or was it more?; time flies)

I paid mine €250 at Thomann about 2 years ago (or was it more?; time flies) I paid about £229 (GBP) for mine a few years ago...... not much of a "bargain" here..... £50 would be a bargain

It's £150 isn't it? (Or am I reading it wrong?) I was going to say, I think I paid £230 for mine. Got shot of it though - too edgy for me. Dave, K601 was around £130. A more pleasant listen.

Well, I enjoyed my K701 which I obtained in late 2005 when they first came out. Kept then for about 4 years, prefer the K501 and the K1000.

The amp thing is exactly what I found too. Plus the fact that they remind me of a toilet.

And I believe their VIP club members, new and old, (quick, easy and free to join), can get 10% off that price (or any other HPs they sell).Oooops, looks as though that offer is no longer available - sorry guys

I still reckon the K601 is a good one to have a listen to. It's much cheaper than the K701 and on a good amp, it positively sings. On a poor amp (that doesn't have enough power) it's a bit thin and edgy. It's way down in price in comparison to a 701 since it kind of lives in its shadow, but it's one of the most revealing and neutral sounding headphones I have.
It's a really balanced and warm sound. Great sense of space and when I used it with John's DAC32, it was really breathtaking. It seems to grow with the gear. Great for assessing stuff.
It's one headphone I've always used ever since I got one. K701 was a little more top orientated for me and always verged on too far. K601 is smoother.

I wasn't much of a fan at first....but, I figured out how to love them, at least in my humble set up.
Now, this comes from a fan of the Audio Technica family....family, not family sound...the AD-700 and the W-5000...two very different sounding headphones. And very different from the 702's.
But, this is about the K-701-702. First, they need A LOT of break in time...and...need to be played through all the time. Like leave 'em in the loop somewhere whilst listening to other cans, or give them a ton of warm up time. Also, they need an amp that gives them a ton of gain and room to breathe. My fav is the Vincent KHV-111 with either a Telefunken 12AX7 or CBS 7729 in place of the Chinese 12ax7 tube it came with. My Pioneer Elite PD-65, which was modified by RAM here in the States (their $1500 mod) which included their Audio Consulting transformer output analog output stage, has a 4 volt output, which gives this tube can amp plenty of juice to work with. All good for the 702's. It doesn't seem to matter what type of music I listen to through them...Kruder and Dorfmeister, Soul LIve, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, or some good old Telemann violin concerto's....the 702's in my rig, really do the explicit mid range, deep bass, expanded sound stage thing for me. For me.
They just don't seem to be able to slot into my other amps/sources very well....although the Rock Grotto/Doug Jessie Musical Fidelity X-Cans v.1 upgrade set up gives them the juice to operate, also. And, as long as I put in a pair of Amperex Orange Globes or Siemens 6dj8's in it....I'll get a clear and detailed musicality out of them.
I remember, about 5 years ago in another post, I surmised I didn't like them much alongside my W-5000's, but a poster from the Continent mentioned "natural sounding acoustic instruments" and I thought maybe I'll give them another chance....and once I began listening for their strengths, I found a wonderful (but tricky to set up) sound. I've never encountered a music playback item that required such TLC. I even sometimes add my passive preamp...a Rothwell....just to adjust levels a bit for this and that. But, for me it's become a very worthwhile endeavor.
I really dig 'em.....J

Most neutral sounding performance with the K701 is when using an amplifier with plenty of voltage drive, from a source impedance of 120 ohms, as they were designed to comply with IEC61938, that states that headphones should be driven by a 120 ohm source regardless of headphone impedance. Alex

That's a pity. They are a really nice headphone and got overshadowed by the K701. Just a fraction less edgy than the K701. I thought they were a bargain.

I've seen other sites talking about the K601 maybe disappearing.
Another that I think is a good bargain but with a tipped up bass is the DT990. It's basically a DT880 driver with different voicing but surprisingly good for the money.
For me the K601 and DT990 are bargains for the sound that you get. (Quite different sounding though)

FWIW I've just had a response from the Dutch site linked above confirming that the K601 is out of stock and about to be replaced so if you want one get searching now .

Oh, that's a shame. There are certain products that kind of stand out that are no longer sold like the old NAD 3020, the Senn 414 (I had a few of those), K1000, etc
The K601 (and 501) is one that will stay in my memory as a really good value headphone.
The DT990 is like an industry headphone. Seen them around occasionally but they are bass and treble lifted. Very good for home listening. Once again, fantastic value.

X2Got a pair after carefully reading what you wrote about them Ian. Knowing that you liked the DT150, which I love, I thought, "If Ian likes the DT990, I probably will as well". O.K., its hardly super-accurate, but its fun, and lets you enjoy the music rather than analysing it.
