Since I bought the HiFiMan HE-500, my D2000s started paling by comparison, but I didn't want to sell them, for I invested a bit of time and effort recabling them with the Cardas Cable. I decided to take a chance and modify them rather drastically through judicious damping of the drivers as well as the cups, which I replaced with a pair mahogany Denon D5000 cups, picked up at eBay. The result is absolutely stunning! The bass tightened up without any reduction; all ringing dissapeared, bringing about incredible clarity; the treble now is much more refined. The overall SQ is effortless, and very pleasing! To sum up, they are now among my favorite headphones, and that includes the fantastic HE-500! Here is a photo: Cheers! Israel

Well done, Israel. I have wondered a great deal about damping the cups. Alex did this with his Audio Technicas and a couple of blobs of bitumen.
You always make a good job out of it too. They look really good.
I still like the very rich sound from the D2000 a great deal but it is funny how a better headphone can make you reassess the lessers and bring them up to spec once you have a reference that you like.

This mod wasn't as difficult as it may seem -- just more time consuming than recabling, for it requires extensive use of Dynamat Extreme (meticulously cut to various shapes and sizes) and Fiberloft Polyester Fiberfill as well as some pourous foam rubber, both on the cups and inside the driver units (especially touchy and time consuming). I have also modified the angle of the pads, thickening them, and turning them to be angled more in front of the ears (more like the angle of two speakers in a stereo system), thus expanding and broadening the sound stage. While I didn't follow exactly this guide, if anyone is interested in doing this mod, here is a link for a guide by Mark Lawton: www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/archive/index.php/t-141171.htmlThe Denon AH D2000 are very easy to take apart. Just be sure not to lose the screws! If you are not planning to recable, there will be no soldering required. As always: PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you are afraid to do this on your own, take a look at Mark Lawton's website: www.lawtonaudio.com/page12.htmlHe offers a complete range of mods, and I understand he does a first class job. Cheers! Yes, Mark does a first class job! I know because I have had a D5000 modded by him as well as a D2000 also modded.
