A few days ago , Sydney member David2vk brought his Oppo 95 with Sabre DAC over to my place. By far the best playback that I have ever heard through the SC DAC and the Class A into speakers, was when David plugged a Corsair Voyager with high resolution and normal 16/44.1 .wav files into the Oppo 95.It made playback from DVD-A with my old Oppo 981 sound very mediocre indeed, despite that the old Oppo was still good enough to show how much better Coax SPDIF was than Toslink from the old Oppo when playing material with good surround sound such as "Hotel California." (more detail and better Surround Sound) What Jon Clancy, Greg and Allan have heard previously from my system didn't even come close to this. If I could afford the much cheaper Oppo 93 which has identical capabilities with USB input and digital out,(but not Analogue Out) I would grab one today !!! (as low as AU$629) Alex

Alex so your saying, USB has good possibilities? Allan In your dreams, at least as far as PCs go using external devices powered over a USB cable using typically crappy +5V PC's SMPS. ;D There is a whole industry devoted to supplying devices that help to overcome many of the problems due to USB which was never designed originally to support high quality Audio. The Corsair that has .wav files stored on it was using a higher quality +5V JLH supply over a USB cable with VBus disconnected at the PC end of the USB cable, and there is no cable involved when plugged directly into the Oppo. Neither are there any shared USB resources, such as keyboards, Mice or other OS garbage in the Oppo to degrade it. It didn't escape your attention at a recent GTG, that the use of the external +5V JLH PSU with the Corsair gave a marked lift in SQ compared with the Corsair plugged directly into a USB port at our hosts W7 P.C. You also heard a Corsair plugged into our host's Oppo 95 at the same GTG, where the use of the +5V JLH PSU when the Corsair was plugged into the Oppo 95, did not result in an improvement, unless you slept through that part ? . That suggests that the Oppo 95's +5V supply is of a much higher quality than it is in a P.C. You will also recollect that in all cases we were using COAX SPDIF Neither did using the Steve Nugent OffRamp from USB to Coax give an improvement over using Coax SPDIF from our host's W7 P.C. You may also remember that the Corsair using the +5V JLH PSU still sounded a little better from the P.C. than when plugged into the Oppo, then Coax SPDIF into the SC DAC ? I still maintain that the USB from a typical P.C. needs a lot of work to make it half decent, which is where devices like the SOtM eSata USB card with it's ultra clean +5V supply and the means to switch off the supply via the USB cable are very worthwhile additions if you can afford them. The BDP-93 has been discontinued due to its substitute, the BDP-103, becoming available in October (same price as the BDP-93): www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-103/blu-ray-BDP-103-Features.aspxThe BDP-105, the substitute of the BDP-95, will come by the end of the year with same improvements and new funcionality the 103 has over the 93 and adds next ones over the current 95: - Fanless (unlike the BDP-95) - Headphone Amplifier - Can be used as an asynchronous USB DAC (24-bit192KHz) - Optical, Digital Coaxial Input (24-bit/192KHz - Properly oriented XLR outputs - (improvements/tweaks to audio board and PS?) In case of the BDP-105 price is increased over the 95's by $200 to $1,199 USD.

Hi Javier Yes, I am aware of that. Perhaps the price of the 93 may drop a little in October because of this, but I won't hold my breath waiting for it to happen. The 93 is a nice stand alone solution for those not wanting to have a PC whirring away in their listening room, or the added expense of a quiet media P.C. . It is also pretty decent with DVD-A and RBCD via Coax SPDIF, as well as BluRay play if you have a decent DAC. SACD via HDMI should be pretty O.K. too ? There was simply no contest with DVD-A via coax SPDIF against my old Oppo 981HD. It's WAY better. However with the Corsair plugged in, it sounded sensational compared with direct DVD-A playback via CoaxSPDIF. Even "Yello- Bostich (Reflected)" from the Corsair in 16/44.1 sounded damn good. Regards Alex

Oppo has never dropped the price of any of their products, not even to clear stocks as they usually don't have any (they stop producing the older products before making anouncements of new ones). Even 2nd hand most Oppo products hold their price for very long periods. Sometimes they do have refurbished units/B-stock offers though.

Javier The AU RRP for the Oppo 983AU basic unit is AU$649 Oppo is saying $499 RRP for the 103. Given that the AU $ is a little stronger than the US$ , I bet we still have to pay around $649 for the 103. IF it was only $499 I would find a way to get one. Alex

I guess you meant 93 not 983.
The 103 will have the same MSRP as the 93 in EU that €699 (US $909, AU$870). Some places offer a little discount of 20-25€.

As usual, Australia is being ripped off with a RRP of $699, and not available here until December. Alex www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-103/blu-ray-BDP-103-Support.aspx

Consider yourself lucky then, in the EU we are ripped off by an extra AU $170 over what you are asked for. The 105 will probably sell for 1.200€ -> AU $1,492, not bad, isn't it? BTW, great news they have removed the fan. The possibility of using it as an async DAC is also interesting.
The EU model usually comes 2/3 months later than the US model due to different firmware (legal issues) but it looks this time thay've done their homework and same release date is given (October).

Javier Our Sydney member with the full on 95 is likely to get the 105, so I may get to hear it in all modes.I like the idea of the parallel SMPS and linear PSUs in those. I found the attached links info in the 1st post interesting. Doesn't sound like it was "blueprinted" by someone from "The Neverlands" though ! ;D Alex forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=164935
