Hi Guys,
I will be selling off a few odds 'n' ends over the next few weeks and expect to have around £300 in the kitty.
This would enable me to get a couple of 'pre-loved' cans that were originally around the £300 mark - or one set that was around the same price when brand new.
As you can see from my signature the most expensive (when new) cans I have are the Senn 595's. The sort of sound I am after would be a gentle u-curve. I like a powerful sound but not one that is swamped by bass or has so much treble it could remove your fillings. Oh, and open preferably.
So, any suggestions as to what I should try to get a listen to before I take the plunge?

I have Philips SHP9000 which I don't really need. It's as mint as a leaf...

I have a problem at the £300 mark. There are some really good headphones around £200 and then imo there's a kind of void in the middle until you get to the really nice cans. (Like say the Senn HD800)
The HD650 comes to mind but for me, it lacks a little sparkle. I prefer the HD600.
I really like the much cheaper Beyer DT990. (Especially with an X-Can)
A good bargain (but closed) is the Denon D2000 which is being sold off by HMV at about £200. (They used to retail around £300 but I was too tight to buy them then)
£300 is the kind of amount that makes me want to save another £200 and go for a better headphone rather than just get one at that price, if you see what I mean? Or go cheaper because the differences are very subtle between something around £200 and £300)

I imagine the V2 would be able to drive even the 600 ohm reasonably well? 250 ohm is the one I use and it works extremely well with V1, V2 and V8. It has a 'u' shaped response. Good strong bass and clean treble. It's up amongst my favourite headphones and sells for a really good price. It compares well with the D2000 actually. In fact, a little more open perhaps and less fat bass but hits strong. Actually, the DT990 and the K550 make a good combo fort an open and closed headphone - like a matching pair.

Thanks Ian, that sounds just like what I'm after. I'll find a local dealer and have a listen . . . Jeff P.S. Anyone got any other recommendations?

You could get a HiFiMAN HE300, about $250 USD. Or an used HE5!

Hmmm...
The SHP9000 can be yours for about 90 Dollars or so. A Clip Plus could get volume out of it but I would prefer the iRivers in my collection.
I have a rare Philips up for grabs, that's all.

Thanks Mick, Miguel and Ian for the pointers. I'll let you know how I get on. I recently bought a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP's on the 'Bay as 'damaged, right hand side not working.' Easy fix, obviously, though I'm buggered if I know how the pos. cable for the r/h/s driver came loose, but it was. Anyway, absolutely lovely pair of headphones. Gorgeous memory foam pads, fantastic battleship build, super-comfy, amazing carrying case, two cables - just let down by the sound. And not dreadful either- just wildly unbalanced. Way too much bass and rolled off highs. Just about manageable by EQ-ing when using a portable, but I had hoped to be able to use them in my full size rig. I use my TDK wireless when I'm out and about. Such a shame. Still, I'll put them back on E-bay and probably get about 3 times what I paid for them (now they are fixed) and the new owner will still be getting a bargain. www.amazon.co.uk/V-moda-XFLPR-E-NERO-Crossfade-Remote-Control/dp/B003LGMQVG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1344450603&sr=8-6Funk, you cheeky monkey, if you really want to get rid of your Phillips headphones why don't you stick them in the 'Gear for Sale' thread
