Adjusting to headphones...

The title might seem strange given just as many others here I've had many headphones to try out.
Over time my preferences for how a headphone should sound have refined. For a (in my case*) relatively long time I stuck to my K240 DF for casual listening and reference listening. Until I decided I preferred the open K500.
Going from semi-open to open and naturally always preferring speakers some things still amaze me:
1. I don't like it when a headphone sounds too closed in (even when it's a closed headphone).
2. I prefer an open sound, a good sense of space.
The closed headphones I currently own and use:
Pioneer Monitor 10: completely closed and isolation in construction yet it sounds transparent (usable for all genres i.m.o.); detailed without annoying brightness in the upper ranges and the sense of space is quite pleasant.
Sennheiser HD250 II: idem ditto in construction albeit cheaper in finish; idem ditto in sound although a slight bit warmer.
AKG K181 DJ: idem ditto in construction albeit more durable for the 21st century; mostly transparent; detailed with smooth high range extension and amazingly even orchestral pieces sounded remarkably pleasant.
I did away with the DT1350 since I preferred smoother highs and a more emphasized sense of space which the K181 did have.
In a nut shell: going from my closed K181 to open K500 always seemingly 'opens up the sound' yet when I just changed from K500 to my closed Monitor 10 I still had to mentally adjust to the closed stereo sound.
Just an observation...
