We have a new member who hasn't posted yet who is trawling through the posts which is a good habit, but he's looking for a replacement for his HD595.
Since he's new, I'm posting for him. He may join in as soon as he sees something useful.
My take on this is it also depends whether you want to retain the same sound as the HD595 or whether you want a change, Richard.
If you want a similar sound but a little more oomph, the HD600 is a really good headphone. It's expensive. However, if you want something cheaper then the Audio Technica ad700 is a lovely, light sounding headphone. A bit ugly but has a nice feathery textured sound.
They are both open.
I presume you're looking for a direct replacement, but if you feel 'strong' enough, let us know what you're looking for and I'm sure everyone will jump straight in.
The most important things are:
a) cost b) closed or open c) your own preference for sound in comparison to the HD595. ie what you think is missing in the HD595.
I bet someone will have a great answer, once they know.
All the best, Richard.
Ian

Cheers (again) Ian
I've just finished building myself a Panda, just waiting for the enclosure to turn up.
The only reason I'm looking to replace the 595 is they are dropping to bits! Both earpads are on their last legs, and the headband has started to deteriorate.
I listen to a lot of metal, indie and goth. Any phone needs to give me more bass than the 595 does, not that I feel it is lacking, but I,ve not really heard many others.
I have only had a few pairs of phones, started with Sennheiser HD420SL as my first "propper" pair, tried Grado SR80 and absolutely hated the things, bought the 595 years ago and have loved them since.
Going by the great advice on here, I'm looking at HD600 or 650, or maybe the DT990 pro 250ohm.
Cost wise £250 ish max, looks are not a consideration, sound quality is the only thing here. Don't really need sound isolation, hence open at the moment.
Panda will be fed from a Beresford 7510 DAC from my PC.
Cheers Richard

and you kept it all quiet? If you're into Goth and stuff that needs a good solid bass, the Denon d2000 is unbelievable. Not many around now but it has a depth of bass that you just wouldn't believe. The DT990 has a good solid bass end and quite a strong treble too so cymbals can sizzle. I like them a lot too. They have a kind of u shape to the frequency response. For rock on the HD650 - I found that they give a wonderful bass but I always feel the need for a more lively treble. After using the HD580, 600 and 650 for years now, I'm kind of moving away from that sound and finding greater rewards in other things. 990 is a good rock headphone and I really also like the closed AKG k550. It gives a nice thud down below as long as you get a seal. Have you ever tried the Beyer DT770? Now that gives bass big time!!

I've got a good dealer close by, so I'm going to see what he has in to test against my 595.
I should post some pics of the Panda really, I haven't even powered it up yet! Made some mods to it as per Mikes posts, changed diodes, bypassed them etc, some other bypass caps to go on yet.
Not new to electronics, been an engineer for 20+ years, and another Nixie clock fan. Have built quite a few of them now!
Cheers

Mike is a genius with amps. He introduced me to MF V2 and I absolutely loved it from the start. He gets them to a point of absolute silence and pure solid whack!!! Seriously. He also modified an amp I had that was picking up all kinds of noises and emitting hims, buzzes etc. When I got it into my electrically noisy house, it was dead silent. In fact, I couldn't tell it was on. Were you 20 years in Music EE work or EE as in making things? I'm hopeless with a soldering iron nowadays. I can hardly see the blasted joint I'm soldering!! I put a synthesiser together back in the 70's and it all ended in the 80's somewhere (I think) when I electrocuted myself big time. I thought sod that for a lark and left it to someone else to kill me. I could sue them then. Trouble is, once I stopped, I kind of lost interest and never went back to soldering and putting things together again. I also used to make things for radios (transmitters) for when I was touring and wanted to speak to someone human on the end of a radio. That ended as well because of the many weirdos I encountered!!

My time has all been in repairs to office equipment. Last 20 years as a printer engineer. Last time I had anything to do with amps was back in 1990, used to work for Philips repairing dictation machines.

Having used 555s, 580s & 600s there is an improvement to had moving up the scale without changing the overall sound. Oddly the best thing about the HD600 is they are more comfy than the 555s which I find tight and close to my ears. If you like the 595s and you move away from Senns then I am sure the options above are all good but I would suggest you try them all (with your dealer) before committing noting also some are prone to burn in.

For metal and indie GRADO with the flat pads, say the SR225.

The HD250 II Eugenius is selling, is it still for sale? If so I recommend it. (Given I have two HD250s.)

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I'm not really a fan of the Grado on ear style, the SR80's I had irritated me so much, I ended up throwing them across the room!
I'm going to have a listen to some HD600/650 and hopefully some DT770/990. I am already biased toward the Senns, as I know and like the fit, feel and sound of the 595.
Cheers

The 600 and 650 are a little 'darker' than the 595's so if possible, try a DT990 if you can in a shop. They're brighter and seem more dynamic.
I presume you want an open headphone?

definitely prefer open, although I wouldn't rule closed out, depends what the local dealer has in, and preferably not box fresh!

The reason I'm sating is that HMV were doing an end of sale deal of the Denon D2000. It was very expensive but they have been going for £180 from HMV on a special sale.
Big hearted sound which works extremely well with rock. I really like mine a lot.

The D2000 are excellent with rock and as Rabbit says they're a bit of a bargain at HMV at the moment,if there are any still available but I also like my grado Sr325is although you would probably have to buy from the states or 2nd hand to get them within your budget.

They are still on the website, just that I didn't read it properly £199 It is a seriously good headphone. IMO better than Senn HD650. The HMV I went to had them on demo. They are a closed headphone but don't shut out a lot of noise so I call them, semi open!!

I thought I would update for all who gave advice. I listened to a few different brands, that took some time visiting different dealers! I finally settled on the HD650, I knew I would love them. Also acquired Beresfords latest DAC, the Bushmaster, and of course, my Panda is now complete. Cheers
