Enclosed is a photo of my newly recabled Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO 250 Ohm headphones, given to me by my wife as a Father's Day gift last week. The cable I used to do the recabling is a Cardas 4x24 cable, featuring Cardas Golden Ratio, Constant Q, Crossfield, Pure Copper Litz enameled copper conductors, all sleeved in non-microphonic multifilament Techflex nylon sleeve, terminated with a 1/4" Cardas rhodium-plated stereo plug; all the solder joints were done with Cardas Eutectic solder; I also opted to change the wiring from the original manufacturer's single entry cable to separate left and right phone entries, which took a little extra tailoring, but in the end, it all worked out fine, and the SQ improvement was well worth the effort. Cheers!

Thanks, Alex!
It was fun doing it, and I am happy with the results -- glad to have gotten rid of the pesky original coiled cable!
All the Best! Israel

Well done Israel. I hate those coiled cables as well. That looks great.

Thanks, Ian
I am now in the process of burning them in, hooked up to my computer playing through my iTunes library.
After about 120 hours of burn-in, my D2000 are now smoother sounding, especially at the treble; the bass is tighter as well, which I like very much. They seem to have become even more transparent, but not in a glassy way -- I would say, a bit more refined.
Best Regards, Israel

I'm too scared of wrecking my headphones to do that to them, but would love to change the D2000 cable to something more sleek than that tangly one that comes with it!! I really do like the D2000 a lot. I kind of hover between the K550 which is a tad more open than the Denon with a slightly stronger treble presence but a similar (slightly lessened) bass. The K550 almost sounds 'rubber band' like in the way it responds so you get this real 'twang' from bass guitars and a fruitiness from double basses that the Denon doesn't convey as plainly. However, I'd say the Denon sounds more refined - a touch more translucency would make it even better imo. I hate talking about too many headphones because I'm always worried that people wilkl go and spend their hard earned savings on them, but my top four are: Denon D2000 K550 K601 DT1350 The DT990 comes really close for me though as well. Love them all and use them continuously.

Thanks, Miguel
I will enjoy using these. The recabling seems to have opened them even more than before; also, the SQ is somewhat smoother, more natural and realistic as well. Although I had to do a bit of drilling through the cups in order to fit the dual entry cables, and enlarge the two small wire holes close to the headband and fit sealing grommets, the effort was well worthwhile.
Cheers! Israel

I hope that your wife was understanding about you tearing open your expensive new headphones and sticking a hot bit of metal inside them! Still, very neat job. I've thought about some recables myself, but would only really ever do it if the stock cable was damaged/awkward to use rather than for any sound upgrade. Problem is that I don't have any cable on hand that's really supple enough to be useful - I also don't trust myself to be able to emulate the superbly neat job you've done. Hope you're enjoying your new cans, I have yet to explore the Beyerdynamic range but may invest in the future when I have deeper pockets.

Great work, Israel! Good to know you are also part of team "DT 990 Pro". Enjoy them! Thank you, Christian! I like them so much now, that it is indeed a toss-up between my excellent , broken-in D2000 phones, and these! IMHO, the DT990 PROs are a bit more open, and with a wider soundstage than, the nevertheless, still superb D2000s. I know that I will continue using both for their different SQs, as well as all the others in my arsenal. Best Regards, Israel

My wife has full confidence in my ability to tinker, and still come out OK! Haven't screwed up a pair of headphones yet! But, there is always a first time! --- something I dread, but so far hasn't happened! Cheers! Israel

Best Regards, Israel I just put the two of these together on my HP4 amp so I could quickly got from one to the other. It is extremely close isn't it Israel? They are both extremely similar in sound and the DT990 is slightly more open. On rock music, the D2000 seems to offer more depth in the bass and I feel a slightly more 'refined' sounding treble but there's not a lot in it and considering the price of the DT990- it's pretty much an audio bargain isn't it? Funnily enough, the FR graphs for them both show the DT990 to have quite a hump in the bass area - bigger than the D2000, but the D2000 seems to feel more 'weighty' which is rather strange!! www.headphone.com/learning-center/build-a-graph.php?graphID%5B0%5D=2881&graphID%5B1%5D=2141&graphID%5B2%5D=&graphID%5B3%5D=&graphType=0&buttonSelection=Compare+HeadphonesMore of a 'U' shape on the Beyers. You really do have amazingly neat skills getting the headphones to look so great. Both of these are good candidates for changing the lead. I really don't like the curly lead on the DT990 and the Denon lead is stiff and cumbersome. Your both look the business now. Brave man taking the Denon apart!!!

Imagine the whole DT990 line (red) 5 dB lower, because they are referenced to 1kHz which doesn't always make the best comparison pictures. In this case they are very close with just a slight difference between 500Hz and 1.5kHz and the D2000 extends a little further (subsonics you will only hear on certain music though) The D2000 is 'flatter' though.

My preference is the D2000, Frans. It does indeed seem to go lower and the treble is also a little bit more refined sounding imo.
However, the DT990 is amazing value for the sound you get and is close. The 'presence' area is raised in the DT990 so you feel that it has a more open sound but it's not revealing any more detail in all honesty.

I wholeheartedly agree! Yes, indeed it is a real audio bargain, much underestimated. Funnily enough, the FR graphs for them both show the DT990 to have quite a hump in the bass area - bigger than the D2000, but the D2000 seems to feel more 'weighty' which is rather strange!! And, perhaps the reason for the mid-bass hump not being as audible as the graph suggests on the DT990 is because of their open construction. To be honest, I did all that with my heart in my mouth, so to speak, but I have been known to take chances, and always tend to 'push the envelope' pretty much in most things I do, including during my past days of live music performance. Ian, you know that us musicians always live dangerously! When a musician makes a mistake, everybody knows it, as opposed to physicians, who all too often bury their mistakes! And, unfortunately, during the last few months I have had my close shave experiences with some of the less competent ones.... , but fortunately survived to tell the story.

As always, thanks for your explanation, Frans! I especially appreciate the subsonic bass on the D2000s in some good Mahler Symphony recordings. One of them is the fairly recent Mahler Sixth Symphony (Vienna Philharmonic with Pierre Boulez, conducting). Although flawed in the last movement by the extremely out of tune (quarter tone sharp) tuba solos, this recording as a whole still renders an amazing subsonic bass.
