Here's a story about one of the most amazing musical experiences in my life.
Back in summer 2001, I was attending the Jazz Middelheim festival. I went that day for some other performers and it was a sunny Saterday afternoon when Richard Galliano and Michel Portal started their performance. Since it was early afternoon, few seats were populated and i could take the best seats. Then it all started...
From the very first note these 2 played, i was drawn into the music. I was gobsmacked about what they played, and how they played it. A smile grew on my face, shivers went down my spine and a genuine warm feeling inside grew. This experience lasted for over an hour and gives me wonderful memories ever since.
I later bought the CD of this duo and the CD only gives a hint of what I heard back then. At the time these two performed at Jazz Middelheim, they were touring for almost 2 years and the synergy between these men was incredible. This synergy was what made their performance magical. It's not on the CD on all tracks, but the music and performance remains great nevertheless.
Richard Galliano is virtuoso on accordion and Michel is virtuoso on practically all woodwinds (all sax sizes and all clarinet sizes). on top he plays bandonion for this duo performance.
The music is inspired by (and sometimes plain) tango with a twitch and a lot of improvisation.
Even if you're not into his genre, you should be able to remotely sense the magic.
Enjoy!
Cheers, Marc

I tried to give a fair listen but unfortunately my ears go into shutdown on just a few notes from an accordion.
I think my whole aural process has been "vaccinated" by the truly dreadful accordion buskers that we get around here. Now, on first contact with said instrument my hearing goes into full defense mode.
I'm glad you are able to enjoy it for what it is, especially if Galliano is considered of virtuoso standard but, unfortunately, it's pearls before swine for me.
Nice to see other peoples tastes and thanks for sharing.

I know what you mean. I have that with recorder, most barok instruments and rappers
