Hi there!
First Post here.
I need to pair my AKG K601 with a desktop headphone amplifier...
My initial thoughts revolve around the O2 as a budget contender and the Musical Fidelity M1HPA as a more upscale choice.
Budget is up to the M1 level (500 euros roughly).
I like MF and wonder if it would be a good partner for the 601s...
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!!!

I would go with an used MF X-Can V2, then upgrade it with a kit from Mike. Good luck.
Pd: I own such an amp and have had the K601 on loan and know they pair well.

The K601 sounds best when driven by 100 or 120 Ohm output, it is quite easy to replace the output resistors in the X series amps.

R114, R214
In case of the K701 don't expect a radical change of sound. It's subtle at best... but there. Don't be 'fooled' by the drop in SPL. you have to set the volume control a nitch higher to get the same SPL to compare.

I've got a pair of AKG K501, is it worth changing the output resistors on my X-Can V3? If so, what value should the new resistors have?

Only you can tell... AKG's are generally happier at 120 Ohm. As said... the effect is subtle to some and considerable to others. To some it sounds better, to others worse. Technically it is a subtle change but noticeable to trained ears.
