Hi everyone, I had need of a small air cored inductor to use in Alex's great SC Mod 15 Watt Power Amp. Only place I could find was Jaycar and by the time minimum order and postage were factored in that made two very small coils of copper wire rather expensive.
So here is a method of construction which I found works very well and is pretty easy even for my oldish fingers.

Instead of the tape, you can use quick setting epoxy - no microphonics. Just wrap the drill bit with plastic kitchen wrap first.
Great tutorial!

Hi Robin, thanks for the input, I had a look at various ideas after you posted and whilst a few layers of tape plus the plastic ties would IMHO have a deadening effect on the possibility of micro-phonic ringing potting would probably be the best answer. When the plastic ties are pulled up as tight as possible the coil is pretty solid. Wax would be the less costly way and seems to be DIY popular. Epoxy lifts the cost a tad over budget. Would a poly-sulphide type sealant such as is commonly used in the building trade....window frames....be of use? Regards, Alan

Alan, i use standard supermarket 2 component epoxy. 3 euros for a years supply. I also have used polyurethane floor coating. It was left over from a renovation project.

HI Robin, a bit late getting back to this thread but here I am again and about to show your great tip on epoxy and cling film for doing the coils I'll need for my second build of Alex's fantastic sounding AKMODSSC 15watt power amp. So everyone this one's down to Robin. Alan

Well again we start with the now mandatory drill bit as the mandrel.

Nicely done Alan and thanks for sharing I was wondering, in place of the epoxy could you dip the inductors in varnish, a la transformers? Slower drying but....

Oooh, nice! I missed this thread first time around, and those epoxied coils look spot on The set epoxy reminds me of the icing on cinnamon buns! Roger Wilco on the ouput devices, by the way!

Hi Chris, back in the thread Robin does just that with floor varnish, and after he posted that I dipped a trial coil, it worked very well but as you say takes a bit longer to dry. If you can get the cheap epoxy it is worth it as you can have a nice solid coil done in about twenty mins. The Epoxy is dry and hard enough to work with after 5 mins I waited ten. You only have to coat the inside and out with a thin layer. Great part is no messing about looking for a former I just cut up a polythene component pouch to wrap the drill bit. Regards, Alan

Hi Will, with the better quality epoxy brands you can have a proper clear setting compound but at a pound for two sets of resin and hardener from that great Emporium of "rubbish" Poundland you could stick together a dozen sets and have some left over. Alan
