Every now and then, I love to go through folk music stuff and often resort to Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Albion Band.
I've seen and met Fairport members many times and are all great musicians and they often include Albion members in their live shows.
However, another not so well known folk band that I like is the Owl Service. Modal, traditional folk with no massive rock element as in Fairport and Albion.
I kind of feel that Fairport tried much harder to appeal to the American market and Albion stayed truly British.
This stuff from Owl Service is good old fashioned folk.
'The View from the Hill' 'A Garland of Song' 'The Burn Comes Down'
Refreshing change from electrics and loud stuff.
Another real gem in folk music is 'The Imagined Village'. Really good stuff.
Both Owl Service and Imagined are starting to use sitars in their folk music - quite interesting seeing the changes happening in GB with regards to the population and now the influences appearing in British Folk!!! Not sure how I feel about it though.
BTW - Swiss band, I think - SWAP. I only have one album - 'Du Da - I wonder if anyone knows whether they did any more?
