The Senn 414 got me in trouble for secondary advertising!!! One picture of me and the fan spreads it around!! Long time ago. The first headphone I had was a JVC pair I think. Very odd. Built like a tank with cups similar to Grado cups but softer and volume controls on each ear. I thought they were the bees knees and I also had a JVC receiver of some sort. I can't remember the model numbers though. The receiver was really nice. I went from the JVC headphones to the Senn 590? I think it was. It was a closed phone with rounded backs on the earpieces. Ian

either the hd202 or the grado sr325. depends on if you call the 202 proper. I'm quite surprised. Do you still have both? I didn't see you mentioning them so far. nope. sold the grado and i don't know what happened to the senns. the senns sucked comfort wise. this was back when i first started mowing lawns and not everyone had moved out of the area i was mowing. i was using it with a gilmore lite. sold that too for some reason.

I said earlier in this thread that my first proper headphones were Sansui SS2's. In fact they were my first ever headphones in about 1969-70 or thereabouts. My first "proper headphones were Stax Electrostatics.

These are my fathers 1st proper headphones. He has let me borrow them while he is away over the Christmas period. They were extremely grotty but here is a picture after I had cleaned them. When I listened to them I thought they sounded bloody awful. He said LEAK were one of the best HI-FI companies years ago so I was expecting them to sound better than they did. On looking at the 6.3 jack I could see the soldering was not very good. I then decided to strip the headphones down and see what the soldering was like on the drivers - OMG I am not the best solderer in the world but it looked like a bird had shit on the connection- see below. I re-soldered the joints. I have not had time to re-listen but will do so over the next few days, they surely must sound better with good connections? Does anybody out there know anything about these Headphones, I have looked on the net only to find out absolutely nothing about them.

Don't know anything about these, but they LOOK like they could be electrostatics or electrets. I have some Wharfedale Isodynamics from that era (1970s) which are electrets and need to be driven directly from an amp's speaker terminals: might be worth a try (make sure the volume is turned right down!).

It's all here at Rock Grotto... you just have to search (or let me do the searching ) rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=review&action=display&thread=6467I still have my pair and they are quite superb, just pulled them out of their box for a listen and the bass is DEEP.... overall character can be described as quite lush. Give them a good 48 hours, I find they get better after 40 years sitting in a box

By the way... some ham fisted bugger has been in at them, I very much doubt they would have been soldered like that, maybe a cable replacement over the years?

My first ok... pair was a pair of Stantons like the Ross ones in the first post here... the same story also, thought they sounded good then but a quick listen afew months ago proved how crap they sound... My first proper ones where the MB Quart 85, bought circa 89-90, great airy spacious phones, unfortunately gave them to my x, (because i thought they didnt have enough bass)... my x is x and the headphones gone... I have better ones now though (both hahaha...)... ;D MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Mike, I think my dads phones have been sitting in a drawer for somewhere near 40years also? He is 82 In March next year. He had no information about them at all, but with your help I now have quite a bit of info. I am going to put that info into a word doc and give to him next time I see him, I am sure he will appreciate it. I think he will also appreciate they have had a good clean and the wires re-soldered. I have had another listen - they have not had a good warm up but they definitely sounded a lot better. Compared to my Sennheiser HD428 - they sound boxed in and not quite as dynamic, it may be the freq response being only 40hz to 14khz and the impedance of 70Ω making them harder to drive? The Sennheiser's being 18hz to 22khz and 32Ω impedance. I am pretty sure they would benefit from an OFC re-cable? What do you think.

Not sure if the cable would make a difference but the actual "joints" may benefit from a reflow of solder.... 40 years is a long time and oxidisation creeps in. I would rather keep mine in original condition.... they are quite rare (almost mint / boxed) and you certainly wouldn't respray a mint Corgi toy would you? The Leak's are basically rebadged Wharfedales, IIRC, (made by Wharfedale but badged "Leak") I have a magazine (original) somewhere with the review and asking price etc. I will look it out and upload for you. They were far from "high end" back in the day but were quite expensive (in relative terms to today) I think they were something like £27 which was quite a bit of money back then. Considering they are almost 40 years old the sound isn't bad at all.... yes, they are quite "in head" but they have a lovely mellifluous, thrummy tone to them... they are what they are and all I would do to them is maybe resolder the joints. Mike.

Big world out there... not a lot of Leak 3000's... Makes them something worth holding onto and "IF" you're going to listen to them then listen to them for what they are and enjoy that time and place in headphone history. You wouldn't re-varnish a stradivarius violin would you?

You wouldn't re-varnish a stradivarius violin would you? You are right Mike I am going to leave them alone now, they have had a good clean with alcohol and all the joints have been re-soldered. After all they are not my Headphones to mess around with - although my Dad said I could re-cable them if I wanted to. I think I prefer to keep them original and let him listen to them as they were intended. Some things are probably best left alone. Thanks again Mike.

I had some sony bass boosted crapola headphones, my first real pair were Grado SR80's. I now have balanced HF2's but I want to sell them to upgrade.
