Got any old orthodynamic in the drawer, or maybe a new one? Of the new orthodynamics, I have had the pleasure to listen to the excellent Audeze LCD-1 and LCD-2. The vintage orthodynamics I have listened to are so far the Yamaha HP50, YHD2, the Peerless PMB-80, the Dual DK720, the Eagle H4300, the HOK80v2, the Akai ASE40, and the Nad RP18. I also have a Wharfedale ID1 here in pieces. (It's just missing some drivers, except for that it's all there. If I can find my roll of Mogami cable, that is.) Of the Yamahas, I like the YHD2 best but they both have the famous Yamaha mids coloration that's quite nice, although not so neutral. I like the Grundig and Dual best of the PMB-style cans, the Grundig with its nice intimate headstage and mids, and the Dual with it's great sound for rock. The Nad and also Akai resembles the LCD-2 the most, although the LCD-2 is better in every way. Compared to the vintage orthodynamics, the Audeze LCD-2 and Hifiman (HE5-LE, HE6, HE6p). are more in the style of the Rank Organization (most notably the vintage Fostex T50 and Wharfedale Isodynamic ID1). The Audeze and Hifiman have drivers that are tensioned at the edges, the PMB and Yamahas are pinched in the middle, creating a ring-radiator style can. (Meanwhile, the Transmission Audio Ribbon Ear Speaker launch has jumped yet another year forward, from last year to this year.) (There is also a drawing of an Warren Audio PM1, although it's at this time just a drawing, and not in production.)
