For sale is one X-CANS (V1) + MF PSU which I modded at the weekend.
I have had an absolutely PRISTINE X-CANS (V1) board, front and rear panel kicking about for a few years (It was a "spare" and had never been used) so decided to do something with it.
I recently managed to secure a V2 enclosure so thought to myself "aha! something to put the V1 board in" and so it went to pass
There was one small problem but it turned out to be a bit of a blessing.... the X-CANS (V1) enclosure is about 5mm shorter than the V2 so I couldn't get the V1 board to fit in the V2 enclosure "perfectly"..... it soon dawned on me that this was actually a RESULT! I have managed to "vent" the rear of the enclosure and it keeps things pretty cool You couldn't do this with a V1 board and V1 enclosure so this has turned out to be one very unique V1 with a rear "vent".
As I say, the boards had never been used (I purchased them from MF years ago as "spares") so everything on them was new.... you can tell by just looking at the phono sockets and the condition of the board.....
Anyhoo, I removed all the caps and replaced them with high temp. / low ESR types.... Panasonic FC 1500uF / 105c , Samwha VA series / 130c, Panasonic NHG 100uF / 105c, OSCON aluminium caps and Nichicon MUSE non polar input caps.
More capacitance on the PSU board.... 130c Samwha VA caps next to the regulators (which do get hot).... this puppy will last forever! What you are buying here is a true icon (some say it started the headphone amp revolution) but you can be assured that this one will still be up and running tens of years from now as the components I have used are good quality / high temp. / long life.
There is an added bonus! This V1 sounds a LOT better than a stock V1 and is up there with any of the current high quality head amps in that respect.
A few other bits and bobs I did to this amp..... fitted UF4001 ultrafast diodes and shunted them with NOS (UK made) ceramic disc caps, fitted ceramic valve sockets, fitted gold turned pin DIP8 sockets and populated them with Burr Brown OPA2228P opamps, replaced the 470nF metallised polyprops with 1uF WIMA MKS4 types, fitted a Jalco (pro) headphone socket, fitted a mini ALPS potentiometer, fitted a purple LED and fitted an oversized knob for good control.
I matched a pair of brand new / NOS JAN Philips 6922 as I feel they sound great in the V1 (don't like them in V2 or V3). All in all this is one VERY nice amp and it sounds like heaven
I'll have to be real with the asking price.... the boards are MINT condition, the parts are new the overall condition is pretty much pristine and I have spent a fair bit of time putting it all together.
OPA2228, Jan Philips 6922, caps, diodes blah blah blah.....
I think that £200 is raping myself but I am prepared to let this pretty unique gem go for £200 (no less).
Let the pictures paint the words
