www.eet.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=187002204not entirely sure where I stand on this. on one hand I beleive it is wrong to be the sole provider of a service, one that is popular and has zero competition but yet 1-if no one bought into it it would not happen 2-I am not comfortable with governments setting market rules 3-I am a capitalist and beleive manufacturers have a right to profit To allow this would be the first shot at getting the very same law passed on every other software based product and beleive it is really a disguised attempt to go after Microsoft which is and has been a target from the same source. By getting folks used to the idea in small bites it becomes easier to convince a majority down the road to start taking huge bites then again,if the CD stayed a closed source and only available from Phillips/sony and no others i think would have gone the way of the Betamax so the above proves consumers have gotten dumber or ad copy better

just checked the link and it worked fine.Maybe i am just "special" ? ;D
anyway,it is a link to EE times and here is part of the text :
PARIS — The French Senate this week will conclude debate on a law that could effectively shut down online music and video services in France using digital rights management (DRM) systems exclusive to one company's device—a category that includes Apple's iTune online music store and Sony Connect. The proposed revision to the copyright law, passed by the National Assembly in March and to be debated Thursday (May 4) in the Senate, would strike an egalitarian blow for the principle of interoperability. It would require that any digital music or video purchased online be playable in any existing device, regardless of brand.
France's attempt to update its copyright laws, in order to meet standards established by the European Union, has suffered numerous twists and turns. The proposed interoperability law, which goes beyond any existing regulation, has fueled the software industry's ire and has prompted Apple to accuse France of "state-sponsored piracy."
The French law offers leniency to users who download music and other files illegally, while cracking down on software developers who write and distribute programs to crack DRM protection. Included in the proposed legislation is the demand that online music and video services such as iTunes open up proprietary DRM systems. This would allow customers to download songs onto devices other than iPods.

More : www.eet.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=187200972Code word for "we want what we want and see no reason to pay anyone for anything" or in short : Legalised theivery Putting a "law" to it does not change the nature of the thing. If a thing stinks perfume will only cover the stench for a very short period of time and then when you least expect it WHAMMO !FULL FKN DEAD ON STINK !!!!!First of all there is no "right" to anything that belongs to another human that is not required to sustain life such as food,water,air............. Lack of music is not a life threatening event (though close dammit) so not having it will not be cause for thousands to expire in the streets of France Second,a company DOES have a right to not only protect their own property but make a profit on that property and such profits as the market will bear. Tto be successful has always drawn the envy of others but we live in an age where if someone wants to TAKE they find a sympathetic legal body to make bad law rather than the old way of trying harder to compete on the merits. The "I wants" are a particularly whimpering bunch of punks who always want somedamnthing not their own and not wiorked for as if they have a pre-born natural right to have a thing "just because" Hey assholes, gotta news flash for ya "JUST SAY NO !" and the market will settle itself ! NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO BUY ANYTHING !!!!!!!! GET A FKN GRIP ! but you make bad laws to TAKE a thing not yours all you do is shift the profit away from player A (apple) and to player B (whoever steps in with the "right" : with the consumer who is thinking this is such a damn fine idea still paying the same amount but to a company that did NONE og the work other than sick a legal team on the innovators. f**king pathetic that we now coddle "herd culls" that in other times would not be allowed to breed in order to keep the herd strong while those who are the born alphas have to deal with punks waving legal papers to TAKE what they never could in nature by force because they are.......well........PUNKS ! Strong enough wording folks ? Don't get me started.the "I want something for nothing because I want it" crew is one i would take personal pride in throwing around like fkn rag dolls if any ever got directly in my face even for a momentary lapse of sanity on their part. "excuse me rick" would not cut it because no WAY i deprive myself of the sport of "punk tossing" that is no longer a legal activity and why everything is turning to shit

Hi,
I agree with Rick about government involved this way is a bad precident. You might end up with something like this.
In Japan where nearly all politicians have no practical know-how, the government passed a law to block all "non-certified" electronics to be sold. This effectively means killing all secondary(ie used) market. Imagine having to buy everything new (and expensive!). (The law was effectively voided, but after the law was enacted. I sometimes hate being a Japanese.)
For those of us who make money transacting, extracting, and even ... "borrowing" data, it is critical. After all data is what gives us food on our dining tables. (For some, it may mean considerably more.) Extending this to the case with CD's and other audi-visual media, I must sympathize with the manufacturers.
Nonetheless, you must realize something extremely important. Whatever the data media, data has no substance and thus it is extremely difficult to safe-guard against determined "borrowers." Encryption is a good deterrant, but decryption processes takes us time and become unwieldy. Also, embedding that into the existing codes will likely to give birth to an astronomical number of bugs. (More security patches ... which give birth to more bugs ...)
Only the true solution is to terminate all forms of audi-visual recordings. But what fun it will be? I hate to go back to the medival days in which I have to hire "fools" and jugglers for at-home entertainment. (Gawd, can you imagine what's dating gonna be like?)

Hey, Rickster.
Can you play a fiddle? I can hire you as a fiddler in my palace. I would also like a recorder player. Anyone?

sorry man,I am about the least musical human ever born to the race but I do enjoy a good fiddle and have gone to this event every year for over twenty years lasts about 8 hours for under ten bucks, has a mixed crowd ranging from toddlers to those on oxygen assistance, hicks to city folks, beer and pretzels to champagne and caviar from personal coolers, outlaw bikers to local preachers, rich and poor sitting side by side, what shit is supposed to be about but rarely is The music itself runs from total amatuers with damn near no talent yet enough balls to climb up on stage and have at it to serious instrumentalists that are soo good they can make a grown person weep with emotion and the rickmonster is THERE every year no matter what because when this is gone I doubt I ever see its like again. Maybe I can kidnap an unsuspecting trio for the soiree at Palace Tomo ? I could maybe do comic releif/security when I am not chasing the fine looking females around the table
