Thank you so much Mick. I am really looking forward to hearing the difference your rings make when installed on a filtered set of HD681's.
I really appreciate your making the rings available to the R.G. members.

Mick, I received my ringset today and they look superb. A big thank you from me. I have made a donation to Rock Grotto as this wouldn't have happened without the forum. By coincedence my blue leather headband has arrived today from Claus so an enjoyable evening of assembly ahead!

Hi Mick and others, Can I repeat exactly what Jerry (Covenant) posts above - mine too arived today, they look superb and I too am gonna try a fitting session tonight but I wont get to hear the benefits as Ive taken off most of my leads - 2 x MH digital i/cs to Jerry (jandl100) for assessment and other silver i/cs and speaker cables for cryo treatment whilst I'm away. I'll be out of the loop until early June. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Guys, particularly Mick, I've just spent a maximum of 20 minutes replacing the red plastic rings with Mick's pukka rings. Used a sharp kitchen knife gently forced down the joint between red and black plastic and with a gentle mixture of moving the knife round the joint and twisting it slightly the red rings come away. Do this for about 25% of the circumference and then gently get your finger nails behind rge loose ring and pull away gently. The larger rings are loosened in the same way and then by squeezing then (elliptically) slightly they will pull down over the ear piece and away. I then gently filed flat the slight inner 'wall' around the medium sized ring mounting place to permit the solid discs to seat better. A touch of contact adhesive on both surfaces (rings and mounting place), put rings in place and job done!! Now the best bit - I find it difficult to believe the SQ improvement this mod has made - an oft used phrase in these circles but it really has lifted them up a level or several - bass is as tight as a drum (sorry, couldn't resist it ), but the upper range seems better, clearer somehow - I'm hearing the wire brush on the cymbals (sorry to all percussionists ) like I've never heard them before, and all this is on my iPod mp3 player 'cos my set up is now sans cables as they are away being cryo treated - I'm hoping the FLAC files through my G2 and StanDAC will sound even better. Cheers all, Dave.

Well done Dave,
pleased you like them, and the fitting went well, yes the ridge HAS to be removed from the inner plate, and the round nut stuck in the recess(tiny amount of super glue, only to hold in place, self locking when end-cap is attached) on inside of inner plate, do not over tighten end-cap retaining screw.
Enjoy your HP`s and holiday.
Mick.

did I mention I very much like seeing some new smiles in here, the Grotto gets better I MUST replace that "exploding" smilie with something a tad more appropriate.... it looks sooooo childish (as if the others look "professional" )...... I'll get round to the smilies when I have a spare 5 minutes. Chaz..... please PM me your details again, I have your OXO cubes ready to ship. Mike. PS: (in another thread) how are the HEED and V3 amps coming along?

Today, on my 65th birthday, I have received a very velcome present, namely a set of rings etc. for my HD 681. So, Mick, thank you very much indeed for your effort. I certainly look forward to the improvements in looks and SQ. The last visitors have just left, so now I just want to listen to some music.
I am extremely grateful when I think how some people with various skills try to help others on this site.

.. Thanks Mick, you're a lovely man. I'll second that, I got my rings a few weeks back, but have not had the chance to thank Mick, so (again ) Thank you Mick, you are a true gentleman. Superb quality machining as well, I must admit, and I've seen a bit in my time.

My original 2 pence "mass" mod: 2 pence mass mod in position: Mick then "refined" my 2 pence mod and made some fantastic aluminium end pieces: New alu end pieces installed: And Fran's superb filter to complete the mods: The "beefiest" sounding pair of 'phones I own and tons more enjoyable than Grado / Sennheiser / AKG IMO..... You would love them Miguel. KILLER 'phones! I have a 100M reel of that Evolution starquad cable so am gonna order another pair of 681 and see what they sound like "dual entry".... I'll also be trying 8 pence on both sides (4 x 2 pence pieces epoxied together, then polished) should be fun

Shit! Music King have increased the price from £14.99 to £24.99..... Robbers! "£24.99" for a pair of headphones is disgraceful!

I finally listened to a pair of 681 on the meet we held in Fort Myers, Florida. Nice sounding but nowhere as good a Grado.

modified or unmodified What mods ? mkI or MkII filter ? What pads ? In the bass department the HD681 betters all Grado's IMO.
I sold my SR60 on account of lack of bass and over the top details similar like HD681 has over the top details but at least it has bass.
Both cans have their strenghts value is not one of the Grados
