I've been looking for a DVD player and the NAD seems to be a pretty good buy at the discounted price of £199.95 (usually £650 though stoneaudio charge £779!!) so I've pulled the plug on one.... they seem to get a damned good write up as CD / SACD players too audioaffair.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1940Phoned up today and they DO have them in stock

I've just ordered one I already have an Arcam DV135 and find it excellent but my other half always moans that it should be downstairs on the 5.1 system insead of upstairs in the bedroom as my main CDP ;D I wish I'd never demoed it in the 5.1 LOL I was saving for a Cambridge Audio 840c and was almost ready to drop the cash on one when my other half was told she wasn't getting the 6 month maternity cover contract she'd been promised. So she's back to grabbing whatever she can find from the agencies. With that in mind this will stop her whinging about the Arcam and if it does turn out to be sonically superior I'll swap it for the Arcam in the bedroom headphone setup ;D

I doubt I'll go down the Bluray route Chung and just want a "DVD" player to play DVD's.... plus, with the advent of Bluray, DVD's will become a lot cheaper to collect..... Somertimes it's good to buy in at the end of a technology.... you get kick arse players very cheaply

My Arcam DV135 was launched in 2007 for 900 notes and I got it for 300 last year. It was compared quite favourably with £1000 CDPs Obviously not quite as good but no slouch... I reckon the NAD will be of a similar ilk.

Mike I am yet to find a review that shows an internal photo to confirm that it does use a linear PSU, or specifications (even from Nad) that mention the PSU. Alex

"The audio stage of the M5 is fed from a separate linear power supply utilizing a specially designed C-core transformer for the lowest possible noise and best supply regulation. The mechanical and digital circuits have their own independent NAD designed switch mode supply"
That's the M5.

The NAD M55 Apparantly the T585 uses the same M55 boards and the only real difference being the enclosure.

That looks to be a SMPS in the M55 pic
BTW I Can't imagine it being C-core in the M5, more likely R-core, C-cores are usually quite expensive
Nad used to make some pretty decent gear, I've never tried this DVD player but I'd imagine it'll be decent

Somertimes it's good to buy in at the end of a technology.... you get kick arse players very cheaply Oh, I understand your intention as I myself do collect many "antiques" as well as they can be just too cheap not to buy. However, the Oppo BD80 is not another Bluray player but a Bluray universal player that can play DVD-A, SACD, CD, HDCD, DVD, VCD, etc as well. So no worries about collecting end of technology DVD as well. Also, it can do hi-rez audio Bluray like those from 2L. If you want to up the ante, we can also modify, just like the BD83SE. Btw, the basic Oppo Bluray universal structure had been used by many hiend companies for their universal Bluray players. The latest, if I'm not wrong, is Ayre. Also, pretty many upgrades available from many vendors. I had attended some of the pow-wows, and the BD83SE, in general as agreed by all present, outdid the Denon 4010 universal Bluray player in the audio department. I shall not comment on the video department as we are more interested in audio here. BD80 audio department just do not have the upgraded parts of the 83SE, that's all. Yes, the Denon DVD-A1UDC universal Bluray was present and this can be taken as a hint of the credentials in that shootout. For the same kind of money, I will put my bet on the BD80 or 83. I'm sure Alex will as well. As usual YMMV.

I've just had a call from the other half at home. My T585 has apparently arrived. I will report back later! EDIT: First Impressions OK so what can I say... Well for £200 this is a cracking bit of kit. Obviously it has some burning in to do but even straight out of the box it's an impressive listen. The separation and placement of instruments is good. The player seems quite neutral at the moment which surprised me as I was expecting it to be warmer. There is a little sibilance on the top end but only a tad. Bass could do with more impact and mids could be a little warmer but all of these things improved over the first hour or so as I listened so I'm pretty confident that burning in will improve matters. Comparing the sound to my Arcam DV135 the NAD is lacking some of the delicacy that the Arcam produces but in that respect is quite reminiscent of the Arcam before it had burned in. The Arcam resolves details better than the NAD and has a little more sparkle on the top end. It also has a considerable bit more depth, impact and weight in the bass department. Mids too are smoother but the NAD shows a lot of potential and I expect things to be a lot closer in a week or two when the NAD has cooked. Overall I am well happy for 200 notes. Ian

Ian, mine is due to land tomorrow (good company that audio affair lot / keep you updated) so no point asking you to crack the seal and post pics.......
Man..... give it "at least" a week before doing a comparo.... everything sounds like turd fresh out of the wrapper...... I'll let mine cook for a week before even commenting on the SQ.
Mike.
