To be honest I'm sick and tired of running my blunt electric shaver over my face every day so have decided to grow the beard I have always threatened to grow...... yes, this time it's going to happen.
Just thought I'd "share" this momentus occasion with you all and if there's any mileage in a beard discussion then go for it.......
Advantages of beard, disadvantages of beard, beard types, the history of the beard, beard memorabillia, pictures of beards..... whatever you like.

heh, just shaved mine off ;D I have a seasonal routine that goes: clean shaven during the warm months with just a mustache that depending on "mood" is anything from a small upper lip deal to a full "handlebar" nightmare, sometimes with a full goatee, sometimes with just a little Frank Zappa type chin detail. as soon as it gets colder I stop shaving and let my beard grow in full and other than trimming it up here and there it is allowed the freedom to grow until the following spring.I also at this time stop cutting my hair entirely and let the locks of my youth have free reign again. This makes for a very different looking "Rick" and closer to the true RICKMONSTER which for some reason I look MEAN with anything other than a mustache and especially so a goatee (why my wife hates it and why probably I grow it ,just to piss her off for no reason ;D ) The worst is though in the last "beard cycle" I have gotton more gray than lovely blonde-red-brown going on in the chin area and now I look OLD AND MEAN during the winter months, which I am actually since like an old grizzly bear I want no part of winter and would just as well hibernate for the duration I am so fkn miserable Ahhhh, but then summer comes around again and like where everything goes from gray and dreary I go from hairy and snarly back to the unnaturally good looking human that I am and again like nature have my spring "renewal" complete with attitude adjustment.Clean shaven, good tempered and like the forest animals just coming out of hibernation looking to breed...........or at least screw something ;D BTW Mike-you look like a "handlebar mustache" type and would give that a shot first. After you can allow some "fill" to grow at the chin which is easily trimed back to mustache if you dont like it. Full beards are for real old guys or snarly youngsters but cool is the mustache and "goat"

I've had a beard since I was 16. I started off with a moustache/goatee, because I thought it broke up my long face. I've gone through various lengths of goatee, and been clean shaven on and off, but have finally settled for a short full beard, slightly longer around my chin for a bit of definition. I've never felt that a moustache alone would suit me, as my facial hair is much redder than my head hair, and I thought it would look a bit odd.
As with all of human anatomy, some of this next bit is not pretty, but it's truthful:
Advantages: You only have to trim it once every week or two for it to remain fairly neat, rather than shaving every day or two. Insulation in the winter. Sweat doesn't make your face sting like it does when you're clean shaven.
Disadvantages: Can be very itchy when it gets beyond "long stubble" when you first start growing a beard. Puts the girls off most of the time. Can make you look older - I'm regularly told I look about 5 years older than I actually am. If you suffer from dry skin on your face, you can end up with a sort of "facial dandruff" as the hairs dislodge loose skin. Difficult to trim to length quickly unless you have a proper beard trimmer or one of those electric razors for hair with interchangeable "grade" blade length guards - I used to use scissors and a comb when I had just the goatee, but it took ages.

I remember when I was but a "pup" in basic training (Army) shaving was not a choice and even the little bit of blone fuzz i had was enough to get 'gigged' so had to come off before morning formation.
After BCT and "full bald from the neck up" was no longer a must i tried to grow my first mustache.not because I wanted a mustache but because I COULD and no other reason.this led to a very pissed off Rick because at that time it was so soft,so light in color and so "not there" that with mustache or without looked pretty much the same.
being a proud SOB my manhood took a big time "hit" and I felt lacking because I could not grow a proper mustache and when the rickmonster feels inferior he is on a mission to prove superiorority and i went out of my way to be a prick to anyone that had a proper mustache in my platoon.
Could have gotten out of hand ugly until a fellow squad member turned me on to colored mustache wax.Whoever invented this product saved my fellow grunts a world of shit because now even I had a "proper" mustach instead of this wanna be blonde shadow not fit for a full grown man to be sportin' on his upper lip.
I used the product for about six months at which time my actual facial hair caught up to the facade i put up to look cool ;D

Welcome to the club, had mine for 30 + years after a holiday to the (very) salty sea.
My motto in life is don't trust a clean shaved man (or women for that matter).
Be careful with the soldering iron!!
