dean0 Judging by the photos (BTW, very nice work) the new cable is quite short. I imagine that it is considerably shorter than the original cable, so this alone would yield a marked improvement. How flexible is the new cable ? SandyK

Well...... you mentioned " The old cable is realy poor quality with a number of joins inside the drivers and around the headband, before its actually soldered to the drivers, not good" It would have been good to have "seen" these joints..... I'll be going under the bonnet over the Christmas period and will take pictures of the whole shooting match. Very easy to show the "finished" item but a lot more interesting to show the entire "process" Mike. BTW... these poor "joints".... are you saying they aren't actually soldered?

Iam not good at taking pictures whilst working, i'll remember next time . All the joints are soldered, the thing that bothers me is the amount of joints before the cable is soldered to the driver. The cable runs through the headband and is soldered either side and before that there is another joint for the ground, and one for the right driver. Iam sure you'll understand what Im saying when you open yours up.

im just saying there is a big benifit recabling dual entry to squeeze all the potential out of these cans I see your point on the pictures from Frans, there was a solder joint instead of just passing the wire through the holes, they solder a wire between the two other wires in the emty little room on the side, where the logo are. That was strange to my untrained eyes..

Can anyone point me towards a supplier for the Mogami cable, or something similar, preferably in the UK. I wouldn't mind attempting the recabling but the only supplier I could find is www.performanceaudio.com in the US who want a rather extortionate $35.00 for shipping 8 ft of the stuff. Cheers Matt

Cheers Matt Unfortunatly Mogami Cable is hard to source in the UK, I get my stuff from USA here www.redco.com/shopexd.asp?id=504 , very reasonable at $0.91 per foot and shipping costs around $15. How much did you need I may have a little spare.

Thanks for the information.
I was looking initially for around 8-9 feet so as to be able to comfortably sit in my usual listening position. However, this isn't crucial as I don't mind relaxing on the floor with a pillow. About the length of the original cord should be fine if you have some spare. I will of course reimburse you for it.
Thanks

Would any one have any ideas as to a good quality cable that would work well with the HD681's that is available in the UK?
I would like to re-cable mine but have no idea as to what cable to use (never re-cabled can's).
thanks

Good evening Mike. I can't speak for Andy but in my experience cabling makes a hell of a difference with interconnects, so why should the same not apply with the headphones? I know the discussion has been had on here before about snake oil etc. but I trust that it will make an improvement. Plus, it looks really good when it's done. I tend to listen with my eyes a little.

Mike,
Mainly due to the length of the cable, i use these can's in bed and keep on standing on the cable in the morning!
But also i don't mind experimenting on a pair of cans that have cost £15. Some of us can not afford to play with Wd1000's like you!!

I have had mine for a little while, and I can tell you that the HD660 is just a wonderfull phone, after I fitted them with some philips pads I had, they just woke up.
I like them better than the 681, that also is very good but the bigger brother is just better, if the new phones are better than this, then we are really in for a treat.
I would also like to try out the HD330.

The postman delivered a package from Mike yesterdaty morning. Inside, among a few other little goodies ,was a pair of the Superlux HD681 headphones ! Thank you very much for all the goodies , Mike ! Xmas has come early ! Now all I need is for Miguel to send me one of his Bikini babes. ;D I wasn't able to resist immediately dragging out the Jaycar HA and plugging in the HD681. The existing 68 ohm output resistors appear to be quite a good match, as they sounded quite well balanced tonally, although a little warmer than I am used to. Just to see what all the fuss was about with the bottom end, I played "Yim Hoh_Man-Poem of Chinese Drum" They sure aren't lacking in that department!! Rebecca Pidgeon's voice sounds fairly close to what I am used as well. I was also advised yesterday, that my copy of "Yello-Touch" has been despatched. I am really looking forward to hearing just how low these headphones can go with material like that.Their strong performance straight out of the bag was quite a surprise, even more so that they also seemed very efficient, and easy to drive. At the moment, my son is breaking them in for me, but the hard part may be getting them back again, as he was complaining about his headphones lack of low end power. SandyK

I was just browsing the full line AND new for 2009 catalogs and have a couple of observations to make 1-If the prices of directly competing products remain as with the headphones across the board they will be tough to deal with competitively 2-If those products ARE in fact exact "clones this is pretty much STEALING PRODUCTS ! I mean think about it.you do ALL the R&D.You do ALL the marketing. You have all the years of offering a quality product backing up your name thern the guy who actually does the tooling of YOUR plans that YOU SENT so that company could make YOUR PRODUCT decides to cash in on all the work just because he can ? LOOK at the fkn full catalog then look at any small studio pics you can find and you can directly match up the REAL PRODUCTS with the PIRATED designs. This holds true only if the internals are identical otherwise they are just stuffing "shells": but if not ? Stealing, crooks and does not make me comfortable in a world where legit companies lose business (some going under) while the crooks thrive. Rant part over.Back to the cans. not here yet but still had to read up and I have to say I am baffled by the offer of three distinctly differently "voiced" versions of the same mode. WTF ? This makes no sense to me because it offers confusion into an already (for most) confusing arena : Headphone/Amp/Taste Choices I also wonder at the method uses here with as I see it only two possibilities that make sense 1-different drivers for different sound. Idf this is the method used then the first part of my post is moot because it would tell me they are "stuffing shells" rather than producing cheap clones but would also beg the question "how is having two distinct assembly lines and two distinct driver assembly lines"-very wasteful I would think which leads me to 2-Adjusting the damping inside for different sonic profiles This makes more sense because it can be as simple as leaving something "out" (as in material),using different thicknesses of the driver cover sheet, etc. If THIS method then again we get back to the potential cut throat cloning issue because hell guys, any one of us can jimmy open our headsets, add or remove material then close them up but that does not make US headphone designers just folks who can't leave sh*t alone with the difference being we are not trying to cash in. My final observation is on the bass.I had for over twenty either owned or had access to the original 600 ohm studio AKG K240s and yes, they were a friggin' BEAR to drive if you wanted them to sound RIGHT. What do i mean by "right" ? As they were designed to operate is what. The assumption was they would be driven via a resistor network directly from the SPEAKER outputs of a low power (30 to 40 WPC IS low power for a studio) solid state POWER amplifier havinbg an extremely low output impedance and a very high (even after adding the resistors) damping factor.go outside these "norms" and you changed the sound of the actual cans which in an arena where consistance and descriptive lingo (i heard xxx via the 240s that I didn't hear with xxx) meangood product/bad product become monumental in importance so why you just about always seen the 240's matched up with the Crown D-60 30WPC Rack Amp. With this setup you KNEW what you were getting so the consistance was there and if someone heard a thing you knew EXACTLY what they meant and how to correct it and this carried from small studio to small studio (larger too but out of my depths) or even back to the home "project studio' setting. you also knew what any final mixdown would sound like and how to eq it if doing the mix with cans as monitors because you KNEW nyour monitors and you KNEW what the average consumer system/boom box/car stereo sounded like AND what was expected from the final cut. but plug those cans into a wimp ass "headphone" amp ? HA ! HaHaHa ! Get your ass kicked is what because you just changed EVERYTHING and that may be where we are at now.Granted modern cans are now designed to be easier to drive (along with the more delicateness of the drivers, youDON'T BLOW 600 ohm drivers !) but that is because we are up to our NECKS in teeny tiny "headphone" amplifiers that have NO SHOT at driving a boxload of 240's like the old Crown amps did ! So these babies are bass monsters ? maybe even a bit too much ? time to hit the bitches with some real juice to see if this is no more than driving the cans in an underdamped condition by amps not up tp playing with the bnig boys is my thought

Hi HD681 fans..
Don' t know if this is supposed to be in another thread but..
If you want to order modified (or have your HD681 modded) PM me. My supplier has HD681's in stock again for 15 Euro each.
I can still supply Velours earpads for the HD681 but only if I have enough demand for it (this lowers the price as we share the first shipping costs to me) these are around 19 - 20 Euros a pair Depending on total order I make).
Shipping costs for earpads in Europe depends on weight (approx 2 Euros ?)
update dec. 19th : velours earpads and 1 modded phone are reserved. If there are at least 2 or 3 people that would like velours earpads I will order more.

2-If those products ARE in fact exact "clones this is pretty much STEALING PRODUCTS ! I don't think the HD-681 are clones Rick... they differ in a few ways from the AKG... the super flexible design being one of them, you can almost tie these 'phones in a knot and they spring back into shape.... they may "look" similar but there are a few aspects of the design which make them stand out as different. Agreed, but what if it's the other way round? ;D What if the original design belongs to the GOANG-FANN CO., LTD (the makers of Superlux and other well known 'phones) and they have been pretty much "tied down" to making headphones, cheaply, for a Euro manufacturer who sells them for $$$ per pair..... surely it's cool for that company to decide to start selling under their own name? A few years ago this wouldn't have been possible but a lot of things have changed... the market is now a lot more "free" and a lot of badge engineering companies can now go it alone. As I say.... all depends "who" designed "what" Any of us who actually believe that everything is designed in the western world is living in cloud cuckoo land! Some of these outfits in China have R&D facilities that we can only dream of. Trust me Rick, this is a VERY kosher company with a worldwide, established, distribution network.... they are active at all the Hi-Fi expos, WELL known in the pro arena (especially with their microphones)..... this is not some kitchen table outfit.... they are a RAPIDLY expanding company on a BIG scale (just google "GOANG-FANN CO" ) And why not? ALL of my headphones sound different and I don't use any one pair for "everything".... each has it's own sonic character / signature and it's nice being able to choose the appropriate pair of cans for the job in hand.... "3" is not enough! I wish they'd offer "5" pairs of differently voiced HD-681 Why are you "baffled" Rick?.... you, more than most, know that there is no such thing as a "one fits all" solution and I'd thought you'd welcome a pair of headphones which had a few sonic variations to suit individual tastes...... Nothing wrong with this and I just wish EVERY manufacturer offered the same degree of choice.... remember, our ears are as unique as our fingerprints, we all hear things differently and there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to headphones...... I, for one, applaud the opportunity to try out "three" different versions..... more chance I'll find a pair that suits my ears. No! It offers "choice".

History dude.
sennheiser has ine that can show product evolution.
Not even CLOSE to plausible that a single company is behind the design of every aspect of pro studio equipment while the HEAVY HITTERS with BACKGROUNDs and NAMES did not
'cmon mike, you KNOW THAT dog won't hunt
