Yeah - it's peanuts, Mike. Makes you wonder how much does it cost to make these things and if they're a copy of a headphone ...... how much profit are the other lot making? I'm starting to find out things about prices that I never really wanted to know recently. (It proves I've been mugged you see!!) Ian

Very nice job Mick. That has really made these little beauties look like a class act to match their sound.
Having said that, there's something reassuringly cheap about the red trim, not to mention a slight 80's retro feel. It just reminds you that you've beat the "big boys" at their own game and saved ££££s into the bargain. I've almost grown rather fond of it.

Thank you all for your positive comments regarding the mods on the 681`s. Ive made 3prs of the large cup rings, and about 10sets (6 per set of the smaller purely cosmetic rings), the smaller rings are quiet easy to make, the large cup rings a lot more difficult, and time consuming at my level to produce, as there are two different tapers on them, the inner one ( 8deg ) has to be just right, in both angle and diameter, to ensure a perfect fit when bonding to the cup.
Enough of the boring stuff, in my opinion, the cup rings, have enhanced the sound quality still further, as the rings are much more rigid when bonded, than the plastic original ones, and more effective in damping the enclosures.
When time permits, i will make some more sets, which i will make available to Forum members who might like to convert there own (not a difficult job to do) at a cost to cover the price of materials only.
Mike, i have sent you a PM, thanks for posting my photos, and YES to your request (FOC)

In that case Mick, please could you put me down for a set. Despite my fondness for the red rings your aluminium ones look the dogs.
Thanks
Matt

Hi Mick
Amazing transformation, great to be able to do work like that. Can I add my name to the list of 'orders' before it gets too long? ;D

Mick, I've just scored a pair of the Superluxes from Themusicking and they're still at £15 + £3 p&p. So please put me down for a pair of your superb rings! I think they make the cans look much, much more expensive than they are.

Was just speaking to the European distributor and guess what guys?............................................................................. Superlux make headphones for AKG! A quote from a 'Sound on Sound' review for a Superlux microphone: "The Superlux CMH8 mics are only a few of the products manufactured by Tenlux Electronics, based in Taiwan. The company was founded in 1987 initially to supply microphone components for large electronics companies such as Sony, Kenwood and Sharp. In 1993 Tenlux began producing its own microphones, and now has a range including more than 20 different models. It also continues to manufacture microphone products for many companies including Sony, Sharp, Electrovoice and Behringer." Whole review is at www.soundonsound.com/sos/Jan02/articles/superluxmics.aspI fancied one of these budget 'condensor' mics or my 'home studio' but never got around to it. I don't think they make 'em any more. Derek

I think I'll wait for an upmarket pair that gets reviews like "Kills the 701 in every department" for less than £100. Then I'll buy some

Ok all you ring lovers, im all ringed up for now, all those that have made requests up to now will receive them asap ( probably early January), i have enough orders for now, thank you.
I am "getting the message", that most of you that have these HD 681`s would prefer them looking a little more "up market" to match the superb sound quality. Now hopefully, Mikes contact at Supalux, Mr Chung who i understand has been following this thread with interest, is also "getting the message"." Come on Mr Chung it could be done very cheaply, and help make your product a giant killer."
I have one set of rings left, if Mike is in agreement, perhaps these could be fitted to the competition prize, could you get back to me on that Mike?.
Thank you all again, for your generous comments on the upgrade, much appreciated.
Mick.

Ok all you ring lovers, im all ringed up for now I was going to say! You'll be spraying these arse bandits down with pepper dust at this rate... there's a limit to how much one ring can take The message I'm getting from the European representative is the new range will be launched in January and it will be along the same "cheap but good quality sound" idea.... it surprised me, and I shouldn't be divulging this here (but I will ) that the company behind the Superlux brand actually MAKE most of the headphones for AKG (and some other well known "Hi-"end" companies) so these guys are more than adequately "tooled up" and could do aluminium rings, gold rings, rings of fire..... or any ring of your choosing! So..... forget the thought of "Made in Austria" when you look at your K-701 / K702... they are made in Taiwan ;D The Euro representative also mentioned that they will be incorporating their "own" drivers into the new range which are (in his opinion) leaps and bounds better than the AKG / other major headphone companies drivers..... Interesting stuff Superb idea Mick! If you're happy to donate a set for the competition prize I'll be happy to go with that. Would you like to fit them yourself (I'll pay for postage both ways) or do you trust me with the araldite? And thank you for getting our creative juices flowing Mick.... I just hope your ring isn't raw as a result ;D

I chose to get a pair of superlux HD660 also, it is very exiting to find out if they are as good as the HD681, they are twice the price, but shipping made it 10 bucks less, instead of buing them one at a time, so 2 phones for 63 € delivered is what I call a nice price..

Claus, Where did you buy the 660s from? I've only found them on Asian sites for 30euros + delivery. If you find them to be good, let us know and where you got them from.

Would you like to fit them yourself (I'll pay for postage both ways) or do you trust me with the araldite? Another incentive to get entries in to the competition, the prize keeps getting better and better. I also have a pair on order, that is the headphones not the rings, in fact I think postie tried to deliver today but there was no one home so I will pick them up from the depot tomorrow as it is over the road from work. One of my workmates wants a listen to compare with the Sony noise cancelling jobs that he has just bought and if he likes them he will be ordering a pair as well. If I had seen this thread before he asked me what to go for I would have recommended these straight away but as he was just after a cheap pair of closed phones and he is not a critical listener I just told hem to try the Richer Sounds AKG jobbies, he preferred the Sonys though. It will be interesting to get his opinion on the Superlux from a "non audiophile" perspective.
