Hello there.
I was thinking of upgrading my BR5's with a cross-over upgrade from Russ Andrews...
Basically, I like the sound from the speakers, but they lose their space when driven loud, it all becomes a bit 2D, if you know what I mean. I'm also after a bit more focused bass, because they are ported, sometimes the bass sounds a bit flappy?!
I was told that it's probably down to a cheaply made Cross-over. Since then I've taken the C.O out and to be honest... it's huge!
Russ Andews do a kit that replaces the whole unit with just a couple of caps.
Can anyone give me any advice about such an upgrade if it's worth it... Also, any ideas on what the Russ Andrews upgrade is really like?
Many thanks!

Sounds like you are expecting too much from your monitors and as far as I know NO mod will change facts of physics and/or acoustics (ass in how much space can be filled per driver size/Sensitivity/power acceptance level/ultimate SPL level):
1-The "2D" being a sign of compression, you have run out of amp/speaker headroom and if you persist in overdriving twetters at some point they will over heat and go silent
2-Flappng bass-means you are overdriving the woofer BIG TIME and you either need to add a high pass filter to limit the excusion at frequencies the woofer is not capable of at high levels or back off on the level before you do permanant dame to the cone suspension.
Your solution mostly comes down to either sit closer or get larger/higher SPL capable speakers and not in any "tweak" which is meant to massage the sound, make what you have sound better not transcend the very nature of the speaker which is impossible

Ah.
Many thanks Rick.
Ok, so it's looking like I've miss understood the basics there. Thats very interesting.
I think I may be overdriving them slightly. I never let them sound like that for long, I always ease back on the V as it loses the depth to avoid damage.
Thanks again, I might go out and get some different speakers.
What would you recommend (in general) as an upgrade to the MA BR5?

Recommendations ... how long is a piec eof string. That would depend very much on budget!
I still think of all the speakers I've owned I love the Proac resonse 2.5s I have (but that's because they match well with my system) ... but if you are looking for monitor size spekers, then Proacs 1s are worth looking at.
Eitehr way - a bit more information is probably required before your question can be answered if that makes sense.
