Just an observation as I'm burning in the Slee green amp with a new pair of Audio Technica W-5000 headphones compared to my, less than 1 year old AKG-701's.
What I'm feeling (hearing) is that the AKG's are like a Quad set up, i.e., sounding good on everything, whereas the AT's present what's there, sores and all.
I owned a Quad QC-24 preamp and did a little research about the brand and read where Quad made music sound good no matter what the condition of the record, as most 78's where not very good fidelity-wise, and it felt as though the modern QC-24 was designed in the same vein. Only when I bought an AudioNote M-One R little preamp (designed by the same engineer as the Quad, no less) did I hear what each and every recording really sounded like, warts, and all.
I'm getting the same impression with the AKG's, although the "make it sound good" sound is very excellent, it is only in direct comparison with the AudioTechnica's that, holy mother, where did that come from, happens.....a lot with the AT's. AND with the Slee Solo green, it's happening all the time.
When all is burned in and running right, I'll take a listen again. I love the presentation of the AKG's, but when the headphone comes close to taking what the amp is giving, that's a bit special! Of course, IMHO, only!
More to come, John

John, if you get the warm fuzzies continually with the AKGs, and the ATs spectacularly present the warts and sores, just imagine what you would prefer for a wife! I try to pick stuff that does not present a magnifying glass for the warts, rather lets me forget about the hardware for a while.

John,
Surely the Solo doesn't require that much burn in?

John
If you like the resolution of the Audio Technicas, you need to hear from electrostatics!

My apologies for not visiting this thread in a while, and thank you for the responses.
I've owned the Stax headphones, electrostatics, in the 70's, and did not like the limited bass output, nor the sparkle, which seemed pronounced.
The ATH-W5000's give a lot of the definition and not the sparkle. The Slee Solo Green gives the PRaT and the openess to hear into the recording.
Some types of music, i.e., 3 or 4 or 5 piece rock bands just don't have a lot going on to delve deeply into. Now, take my new found Symphonic favorite, the Riccardo Chailly conducted Robert Schumann's 4th Symphony and I'm requiring all of the insight this combo will give me, and it's giving me all I need! Bravo! Or, a string quartet, all the harmonies, cues, and leading edge notes. Wow!
I also find solo piano to be absolutely the best I've heard through the Solo Green, what with all the overtones, and percussive key hits, sustains, etc, that a solo piano can elicit.
So, with all of the above taken into consideration and all the variables included from software to source to interconnects to amp to headphones to mood I'm in (thanks Mike), this Solo Green and ATH-W5000 set up is the best I've heard. I'll keep the AKG's for a change of pace.
And as for a wife, I hope she's more invloving than the hifi set ups I own, or there won't be much time for her, if and when she comes along, again.
