Having recently purchased a Little Dot 2 Amp I have been running it with my aged Audio Technica ATH-911 headphones. I am finding the sound a little bright and forward for my tastes. I was wondering which would be the better buy for me Goldring DR150 or Sennheiser HD555- if I want a warmer, richer sound?

Haven't heard the HD555s, but if you want a "warmer" sound maybe they would be the best choice. Hard decision, both cost about the same, and the DR-150s are meant to be superb cans - at any price.

I have seen some Sennheiser HD590's going fairly cheap - how would these be brightness wise? I have seen these described as bright but is this perhaps only a relative comparison against the HD580/HD600. Anyone got any views on the HD590?

Got the DR150's yesterday and have been burning them in now for approximately 24 Hours.
First impressions are that they are very comfy - although I am glad my head is not any bigger as I have them fully extended. Listened to Roger Waters "Amused to Death" and was very impressed with the sound - these are in no way over bright headphones. In fact I would say the sound balance is practically perfect. My only slight criticism would be that the soundstage is not as wide as my old Audio Technica's.
Stupendous value for money (£60 including delivery), have to say I am glad I didn't go down the Sennheiser 555 route now. Have not yet plucked up courage to remove the driver cloth from inside the phones yet!!
Also does anyone know a UK company that would sell a quality mini jack to mini jack replacement Headphone cable for the DR150's. The stock cable although excellent quality is not quite long enough - I need at least 4.5 metres.

The DR150's have a stock detachable mini jack to mini jack cable. Most extension cables I have seen have a socket at one end rather than a jack. I don't really want to use an extension to the standard cable as this will introduce an extra join.
So what I am after is a 4.5 or 5 metre cable with a male mini jack at each end.

Do it! Honestly, you'll never look back and soundstage will improve too. Get yourself one of those cheap watchmakers screwdriver sets (a quid from your local shop) push back the earpads slightly and undo all 4 screws per earpiece.... you simply pull the driver housing upwards to gain access to the cloth.... remove the cloth (held on by sellotape!) and screw the driver housing back on (finger tight and then one turn to nip them up) not only do they "look" better they sound a LOT better too.... it's not hard to do and no way will you find it difficult, 2 minutes work. As to the cable you can try these www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/35mm5.html they do a varied selection of lengths the one I link to is the 5 metre length terminated at both ends with a 3.5mm jack. Haven't tried it myself but this is the type of thing you're looking for. Mike.

Thanks PinkFloyd ! That link to the cable is exactly what I'm looking for.
Yes I have some of those jewellers screwdrivers so it looks like I have no excuse - wish me luck!

It's a little late I know, but I have a set of HD 555s. I'd say that the overall balance is very similar to the HD 650s, allbeit that the sound is slightly less refined, the top end on the 650s is just a touch sweeter, but you couldn't describe the treble on the 555s as rough or unpleasant. All in all I reckon they give 80 to 90% of the performance of the 650s for half the cost.
