I think you should get the new release of the Fruit Tree Box Set which includes all 3 original albums (remastered in 2000) plus a very fine DVD documentary which should fill in any gaps in your knowledge of Nick.
I first got into Nick's music around 25 years ago - at the time it was a very exclusive club! I am frankly amazed at how popular Nick has become in recent years. But I guess somewhat spookily Nick predicted this fame after his death in the lyrics of "Fruit Tree" -
Fame is but a fruit tree So very unsound. It can never flourish Till its stock is in the ground.
Really if you think you like Nick just be done with it and buy the box. Nick only released 3 albums and they are all works of high genius in my opinion.

The boxed set is a little on the high side price wise, amazon uk. There is a review in the latest edition of Hi-Fi World which more or less backs up what your saying.

If you cannot run to the price of the box I'd go for Bryter Layter as your first CD. Great John Cale involvement on this one - "Northern Sky" is possibly Nick's best track. Try to make sure you get the 2000 remaster of this disc. A shame to miss out on the box though as I guarantee that after hearing Bryter you'll want to hear the other two discs! Also the DVD is superb and not available seperate to the box.

To be contrary I would say go for Five Leaves Left. It was the first ND recording I heard about 10 years ago and is still probably the most played CD in our house. I do have Pink Moon and Bryter Later but FLL is the best IMO

"An introduction to Nick Drake" - contains tracks from all three albumns .. and highly recommended. I bought this on a whim .. and then ended up buying up Pink Moon, Bryter Later, Five Leaves Left
