As a longtime Nick Drake fan I have owned "Solid Air" by John Martyn for many years. I have always loved Martyn's tribute to Nick on the title track but have never properly listened to the rest of the album. Anyway the other night I had a good listen to this via my newly acquired Sennheiser HD650s and was blown away. The bass playing by Danny Thompson is particularly noteworthy. I also was gobsmacked by the sound quality of this early 70s release (I have the remastered CD release).
Anyway I am now on a bit of John Martyn bender! I have listened to "Bless the Weather" and "One World" and was equally as impressed with these albums. I just love it when I discover an artist for the first time and just know that there is a huge back catalogue of 40 odd years of stuff still to listen to.

I haven't heard many John Martyn albums, I guess I really need to make some time.

If you like Solid Air and Bless the Weather I would recommend that you listen to Basket of Light by Pentangle. A bit more towards the traditional than John Martyn but has some more excellent bass playing by Danny Thompson.
I am also awaiting Pentangles first album and will be looking to get a few more of theirs.
And some more John Martyn eventually but both of these artists have set me off on a Folk/Folk Rock buying spree.

Listened to it this weekend and thought it very fine indeed (not heard any Pentangle before). Which Pentangle album should I try next?

John Martyn is IMO one of the great errant genius's in British music of the last 30 plus years. He is also amazing live even now with a piece of his leg missing. Got that off my chest...
As already suggested his earlier stuff is excellent with solid air outstanding and one world not so far behind. I can recommend "small hours" as a very testing hifi track with the echoplex in full effect and what I believe to be water fowl audible in the background. The better your system the more that is going on with this track in particular. In his later work I also recommend "Grace and Danger" as perhaps as melancholy as I have ever heard and the direct outcome of a very bad divorce. If you are depressed dont listen to it alone. It is however very touching and IMO moving in its own way. I have to say that JM on lp is way better than any cd version I have ever heard especially Solid Air.

Well I recieved their 1st album last week and I am finding I like it better than Basket of Light so I think that would be a good choice. Glad you liked the album
