Being even older and hippy-er than Graham (Yikes, I've given it away!), I went and bought 4 versions of "All Along the Watchtower. My favs in order are:
1. Jimi Hendrix-Still cannot be beaten
2. Dave Mason-Just absolutely rocks! Not well known, but should be.
3. Bob Dylan-You shoulda been around when he really meant something!
4. Bryan Ferry-Dylan in a smoking jacket. Too smooth, man, too smooth.
Anyone else?
John

Hendrix is my fave, out of the rather messy Rattle & Hum there is also U2's live version.
Another that back memories of a once famous Band on the Wall in Manchester (and leaving my brothers wedding early to see them) is a version by the Hamsters a constantly touring pub rock band who do a bunch Hendrix Covers as well as a couple of their own, I think it appears on a couple of their albums, Electric Hamsterland. is one.

I'll give a vote for Kenny Wayne Shepherd - who I was luckily enough to see in Chicago - his version of Voodoo Chile and All along the Watchtower were as free running as Hendrix .... most other covers I've heard seem to be more obviously clynical reproductions.

The Hamsters absolutely know how to do a great set ... seen them 3 times now, and I have to say I always enjoy their Hendrix covers.

The Hamsters are on my list!
Thanks, Sol.
And did you see Kenny Wayne Shepherd with the New Orleans Blues Artists tour he had to promote his documentary cd? The cd is fabulous and the DVD that comes with it is crazy good. I like that he kinda stays in the background and lets the blues stars of the past have their due. It is an amazing set! I would have loved to see that set in person. Quite a lot of history there.

I gotta say I prefer SRV's Vodoo Chile and Little Wing over Jimi's.

There was no pretentious upstaging of the blues artists ... just a definate love fo the blues .. and teh final 20 mins we wicked - and probably helped by the copious amounts of beer I'd consumed by then.

The Hendrix version, yes, but followed closely by the Dave Matthews version, I think that one was live only but I could be wrong.

My vote goes to the Dave Mason version. My Dad turned me on to his "Certified Live" album over 30 years ago. I still listen to it often, lots of gems on that one.

Dave Mason does a rockin' good job on "All Along the Watchtower"! If you haven't heard it, it is time to find it, mostly on his "Best of" titles. It's there on all of them. Very tight jam. John
