Anyone else listen to Krautrock? There's some fantastic albums out there from German groups mainly operating in the early 70's. Some of these that sound particulary good on Headphones and I can recommend are :
Neu - Debut and Neu 75
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
Amon Duul - Yeti
Popol Vuh - Affenstunde
Brainticket - Cottonwoodhill (Hear this if nothing else here - you won't be dissapointed).
Dyzan - Electric Silence
Faust - Debut
Agitation Free - Second
I could go on and on but suffice to say if you have the slightest interest just do it - this stuff is incredible.

Anyone else listen to Krautrock? Never heard of them ... I really like Kraftwerk .. and Autobhan is one of my all time favourites. Still stands up today .. and there's a starkness to their sound that is entirely original. Most of the other bands I've not heard off ... are they similar genre, or different again?

Thanks for replying Sol - I was begining to think that it was one of those "I'll get me coat" threads with no replies! Really all the above Krautrock bands are unique with the only common thread being that they come from Germany. However, if you like Kraftwerk you should really try one of the Neu albums. They were pioneers of the so called motorik sound which fits in with Autobahn. Also members of Neu used to perform with Kraftwerk in the late 60's and early 70's. Checkout this review on Julian Cope's excellent Head Heritage website :- www.headheritage.co.uk/unsung/review/894

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the article - that is a very good summary of the whole Krautrock scene. If anyone is interested in this stuff I cannot recommend highly enough Julian Cope's "Krautrocksampler" book, however, this is now out of print and now goes for £60 plus on eBay.
"Can" are another one of the Premier League of Krautrock bands - I have the majority of their albums on CD. Can's album "Tago Mago" is an undisputed masterpiece.

Nice thread! And I'd like to add Grobschnitt's "Solar Music Live" to the list...
theadmans: How about Eloy and Tangerine Dream - also your cup of tea?
Greetings from Munich!

Tangerine Dream is my cup of tea Lini, they are awesome! Edgar Froese rocks man What about Rammstein, anybody into them? I have their album "sehnsucht" not bad as driving music but I wouldn't want to make love listening to them. Kraftwerk are far out! I love their album "Maximum / Minimum" top quality recording

Yes I also love Tangerine Dream - in fact I was only listening to "Force Majeure" the other night. A very good headphone album that one.
In fact Tangerine Dream was the first live concert I went to see when they visited my boyhood home city of Leicester. Left an indelible mark on my teenage brain.
Oh and a few years later I got to see Kraftwerk play live in a small semi-secret gig at Leicester Polytechnic - that was an awesome experience.

Tangerine Dream - Ferguson integrated Hifi and Garrad Deck - Volume at 10 - mother screaming to turn it down. A right of passage for every teenager in the 70's. Tangerine Dream were also my first gig, and I recenlty bought a copy of Tangerine Dream Live on CD to repalce the LP I lost - Coldwater Canyon still ranks high on my list of desirable late night headphone sessions.

Its not really Krautrock but i picked up an early Klaus Schulze LP yesterday and it sounds great if you like early 70s electronic music

I think Klaus definately falls into the Krautrock category - although I agree his music doesn't really "rock" as such. I have Klaus's "Irrlicht", "Timewind" and "Blackdance" albums all of which are superb.
As well as the solo stuff Klaus made key contributions to the legendary (in Krautrock circles) "Cosmic Jokers" series of albums. The Cosmic Jokers album "Planeten Sit-In" is subtitled the "Quadrosound Hobby Magazine Sampler" - I couldn't resist getting that!

Great super rare LP is Sand's Golem, the long deleted reissue CD is a must Yeah Sand's Golem - I've got the CD - sounds interesting on headphones as it was recorded with the Kunstkopf-Stereophonie technique or Artificial Head Stereo Sound.
