So heading into the dark days, getting cold, days shorter, leaves dropping all around meaning it won't be long now before everything is a bland gray color..working my ass off trying to make ends meet (12 hour days or better) and losing the war and I am bored as fk there being not enough down time to DO anything yet too much to just vege out so here is the deal : I have a Meier Audio Corda HA-1 PCB ready to stuff that it seems I will never get around to building so rather than have it stagnate I would rather see it go to someone who will use it but being me i can't just post "first one to ask takes it" so I need a reason to give it to someone. You need to either make me laugh, baffle me or make me weep with your dire need with the winner to be totally up to me depending on mood at the time and i am a moody bastard so it is wide open EDIT : Lucky Dog selected Friday if I am sober,Saturday if not and maybe even Sunday after NFL Football if i have one of those "lost" weekends we all know and love

OK then, how about this/Explain to me why YOU should get this headphone amp pcb above all others and I will choose the most deserving.Be honest now folks-no twenty amp owners claiming to be ampless or oppurtunists looking to build the amp then make a quick hit on ebay.Let someone who either truly wants this amp or is ampless (or amp "light" as in crap) have a shot Really is a nice amp project (beautiful board work) and if i had the time/desire would whip out the amp myself but knowing it will not happen any time soon due to limited time and other projects in the pipeline all over the bench would like to see it go to someone who would actually have a use for this headphone amp this is the amp build page : www.meier-audio.homepage.t-online.de/headamp.htm

I would like this PCB because... 1. It will be my first "from the PCB up" build. 2. I will build it! 3. I will take pictures of it in a delightful Hammond case, because I know how much you like them. ;D 4. I'm willing to bribe the judge! 5. I think Kellogg's cornflakes are the best breakfast cereal in the world and are incredibly nutritious, especially when sprinkled on food.

Im going to nominate Xerxes , if that's allowed.
As
1. It will be my first "from the PCB up" build. -- I bet he'll do a good job and the amp deserves it.
2. I will build it! -- and I think he will.
3. I will take pictures of it in a delightful Hammond case, because I know how much you like them. -- I love hammond cases for their simple no frills basicness , so would like to see the finished result.

Objection! I object most strongly! Never had and amp, will never have one because I spend all my money on sweets and hardcore drugs so I should be the winner.... yes me It's rigged, rigged I tell you!
hehe, well done xerxes I think it was the cornflakes reference that did it..... well done man! Oh, and as a bonus over and above Rick's fantastic prize I'll send you a pair of the very rare (and elusive) buf634 which this amp requires..... send me your details and they'll be in the post to you.
Well done.
Mike.

And xerxes...... a nice little resource to help you with your build and parts list here: www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=166960 It rambles on and on but eventually gets to the point somewhere, I can't be arsed reading through it all.

yup BTW-easy on the "rigged" sh*t mikester. The last time I joked like that here all hell broke loose DAMN RIGHT IT WAS ! The "bribe" did not hurt either he is deserving.Have enjoyed his presence on these pages from the start because he is a total wildcard with no preconceptions but rather open minded and willing to build and THEN decide what is up nice touch mike.Very cool dude And is the infamous thread where Mike announces to the world that he abuses buffers-the "I beat the shit out of the buf634 with a hammer" thread Still has me laughing out loud (Mikey the buffer Killer ) Classic and sooo reminds me of me that i am convinced we were separated at birth

Wow, that was easy, the line about the cornflakes never, ever worked in any of those damned tie breakers before. Thanks guys, I'm really looking forward to building this. I've sent you both a E-mail with my address and my real name.

Buf 634 sent via recorded delivery this morning xerxes so will be with you shortly. Trees down all over the place up here and parts of the Thurso to Inverness road are blocked so it'll probably be early next week before they arrive unless they fly your buffers out of Wick to the Inverness sorting office.

Thanks Mike. I've started collecting all the parts as detailed in the BOM spreadsheet in the Head-Fi thread. I've pretty much got everything, but couldn't find the exact values for some of the resistors, are these substitutions going to be OK? Original : Substitute 2k2 : 2k21 12K : 12K1 47K : 47K5 470 : 475 4K7 : 4k75 3k3 : 3k32 I got the Silver Mica caps, but couldn't find any Polypropylene film caps that will fit, so I've picked these Metalised Polyester: uk.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?sku=1006032 for the 0.1 and 0.22uF caps. Will these be OK or should I select something else?

I used these www.rapidonline.com pt no: 10-1780 and 10-1785 WIMA MKS4, a perfect fit and sound not too bad. I can't open the link you point to xerxes, page cannot be displayed message. Edit, tell a lie I used the 250V versions pt no: 10-1805 EDIT 2: The ones you point to are perfect for the job.

Thanks Mike,
I've found some Polyproylene caps with the required 5mm lead spacing, RS part numbers 484-1978 and 484-1984. What do you think, a better option than the Polyester caps?

Sorry man I'm getting confused here I thought you were referring to the 220nF caps, I used Wima MKS4. The 220pF I used silvered Mica and the 100nF WIMA MKS4..... can't remember the rest without popping the hood but all the pF values should be silvered micas, ceramics, polypropylenes or polystyrene... whatever flavour you prefer xerxes.

hopefully his horsey (Pony Express delivery) is faster than the one doing my delivery or the guy may grow old and blind before ever actually laying hands on the buffers sorry Mikester, couldn't resist BTW-Hopefully they are in pristine condition and not the "beat to shit with a damn hammer on a concrete floor" version from the Head-fi thread

I picked Silver Mica caps for all the pF values, as per the Excel BOM and looking at the pictures it would sem that I selected the same ones from RS that you have used. The ones I'm not sure about are the 2 x 0.1uF and the 12 x .022uF.
As a general rule, how do Polyester and Polypropylene sound different?
Other stuff:
Panasonic FC 3,300uF - 35v Panasonic FM 2,300uF - 25v 0.25 watt resistors: Welwyn RC55Y 0.1% Metal Film 0.5 watt resistors: Welwyn MFR4 1% Metal Film 5 watt resistor: TYCO Wirewound ceramic.

hopefully his horsey (Pony Express delivery) is faster than the one doing my delivery or the guy may grow old and blind before ever actually laying hands on the buffers Your package reached the USA in 2 days man (by jet aeroplane) Your item, posted on 10/10/06 with reference RI812800107GB has been passed to the overseas postal service for delivery in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.Now it's in the USA somewhere probably being "ridden" by some sex crazed hillbilly at Kennedy airport. The service I used was Royal Mail Signed For International (by appointment to the Queen / no, not Freddie Mercury) so you will have to sign for it before they hand it over man (you'll probably have to bend over and accept one up the arse over there but, generally a signature is all that's required in most countries ) Are you sure the postman didn't leave a "we called but you were out" note?? May be worth asking him mate. The post office requires 6 weeks to have passed before they consider a package "missing" and then they will compensate me with the princely sum of £32.... not a lot of use to me considering I'd prefer you to get your package! "Signed for international" my arsehole! BTW-Hopefully they are in pristine condition and not the "beat to shit with a damn hammer on a concrete floor" version from the Head-fi thread f**k, you've given the game away! It's taken me 6 months to reconstruct those buffers from dust back into good working examples, six months of burning the candle at both ends and over £670,000 in machinery..... nah, they're brand new

The ones I'm not sure about are the 2 x 0.1uF and the 12 x .022uF. 100nF and 220nF I used WIMA types from a bag I have somewhere... I'll look and see if I can find the bag of them. 63V 100nF / 220nF should be about the right pitch. As a general rule, how do Polyester and Polypropylene sound different? Hard one to answer but, from my experience, polyprops generally sound more rubbery and bouncy whereas polyester is a tad more on the grainy, organic side. Very hard to put into words and there are times I prefer the sound of polyester to polypropylene and vice versa.... as a general rule, fit polyester first and then try polypropylene once you get the bastard up and running. Panasonic FC 3,300uF - 35v Panasonic FM 2,300uF - 25v 0.25 watt resistors: Welwyn RC55Y 0.1% Metal Film 0.5 watt resistors: Welwyn MFR4 1% Metal Film 5 watt resistor: TYCO Wirewound ceramic. Sounds good, I used 3300uF in both positions, didn't bother with the 2,300uF.

To be honest xerxes I've already forgotten I even put one of those together, let alone remember what goes where, I'm finding this a lot recently you know.... I'll get an e-mail from someone I built an amp for 5 years ago, for example, and I'm like "eh? I can't remember putting that one together" It must be an age thing, memory like a sieve these days. What I can remember about the HA1 build is the buffers were a pig to solder into position, as Rick has already said, I'm still convinced the batch was iffy as the other lot I got soldered in no problems (the first lot I got were lead free) the first two went under the hammer Other points I can remember.... hmmmm.. ah, yes, CRAP pads in places (especially IC / resistor positions) you want to be in and out of there in one go and don't even think about repeat visits (ie: resistor rolls or opamp rolls) I'd stronlgy suggest you fit dil8 turned pin sockets if you're contemplating trying a few different opamps. Remember, this PCB is commercial and specced for "fit once and forget" it's not robust enough for rabid rolling. I did a lot of rolling and ended up with the LM6171... sounded best.... so best just to go with the program here and fit it from day one Transformer is easy enough to source and I think I uploaded a 230V connection diagram on the head-fi thread (and a 115V) but it should be self explanatory from the markings on the PCB where to jumper with zero ohm links. The only resistors I paid particular attention to (ie: spent money on) were the 47K and 120R, the rest I used 1% metal film and hand matched the values. 0.1% are good in the temperature co-efficient department (15ppm) and can be beneficial SQ wise in certain parts of the circuit but your standard 1% metal films with their 50ppm temp coeff are good to go in the majority of the circuit... just match them up with an ohmeter. A lot of people think they're paying for the good tolerance when they buy a 0.1% RC55Y..... they're not, they're buying a lower (15ppm) temperature coefficient which is not, necessarily, beneficial in a headphone amp. I'll see what else I can dig up xerxes but the HF thread should cover most of it... it's basically a case of getting the right parts then it's painting by numbers as all the values and orientation of parts is printed on the PCB.... piece of cake to a man of your talents. All the best. Mike.

If it went to Kennedy then it hit a "Hillbilly" free zone dude. Now if it came straight to Connecticut via Bradley International I weould have my doubts. BTW : What's the difference between "blues" and "Country Western" ? Both sing about wrongs and/or pain but with the blues you may cry but when the tears dry someone is gonna get hurt but CW ? More whimper baby "what can I do about it" punk street ! Example : "My girl left me for my best freind" as the hook CW Version : "Poor me,what will i do,i really loved her and she hurt me" Blues version " I gave That bitch everything and I get this ? Oooh is she gonna pay ! And that prick "jody" mother fkr is a walking corpse strike me down if i lie !!!!" Speaking of "hillbillies" I beleive i have related some of my "Tales from the Central NY Move Experiment" when I felt a need to back away from the fast lane for a bit and dude, inbred central ! Local past time was either beating the shit out of someone five on one (punk fks POS wanna bees),screwing your best freinds girlfreind or if that wasn't open for "bidness" taking the cousin or sister for a twirl The men (OK Boys) were no code punks, all the women I met not having a thought going above the waist and in fact my first "bar" experience was when I stopped into a pub for a quick burger and beer at lunch time, was sitting alone when in walked this "hotty" who walked in the door, walked right up to my booth, sat, pulled up her shirt showing some serious womanhood and asked "what do you think of these" NEVER MET THE WOMAN IN MY LIFE and I am being flashed ! This became a regular event in that town (Cortland NY) and while the "boys" were busy beating the shit out of each other (tell you the story of the five on one with me the one another day ) then going home to beat the shit out of the girlfriend/wife they were throwing themselves at me.Got so bad that as my wife was delivering lunch to me on the job the females were whipping their bras and panties out the window at me while up a frikkin' ladder.the damn ground looked like a fkn laundry ! I guess it was an attempt to widen the gene pool beyond "uncle bob" but I digress from topic (habit when on a roll ) well in that case the MF better present himself in full regalia or I ain't goin' for it.I'm talkin' like this is what i expect at my door : At that time i will understand why the fk it took so long and accept the "royal" delivery but if this guy comes to me door ? someone is getting their ass kicked ! Nope ! No dozen roses and a "sorry for the delay" or ANYTHING ! I mean jeez dude ! I usally like roses, dinner and some sweet talk/lies before gettin' fked ! I neeed the "I love you" before gettin' the shaft even if I KNOW is is all BS ! A Girl gotta have something to use as an excuse just messin' with ya mike.It will get here eventually and i thank you for the effort dudester Rickerapter Rex-Grand Poobah and master of all things having even the slightest import

Hi Mike, Many thanks, once again, very generous of you. I had a good read of the Head-fi thread, already saved a copy of the picture with the jumpering for 230v etc. and take on board what you say about the pads and have included some DIL sockets in my order, although I've selected LM6171 and will likely stick with those. I believe my WNA MkII uses LM6171s, so it will be interesting to compare the two amps when I'm done. I haven't actually placed the orders for the parts yet, but have saved them at the respective web sites. I'll wait untill the PCB arrives so that I can measure the lead spaces etc. and make sure all the parts I've selected will fit.

Q. What's black and has ten legs. A. The two BUF634s which turned up safe and sound this morning. Thanks Mike. I'm off to a party this evening, perhaps I'll be able to "score" some more components there; apparently it happens quite a lot. ;D
