So I have been using these for a damn long time because I like to be able to pull the entire ciruit out for tweaking without having to desolder all the input/output connections which is
A-a serious pain in the ass
B-can damage or deform the dielectric of the jack from too much soldering/unsoldering
I can't bitch about the jack other than to say at $4 per they can get a bit pricey if the thing being built uses many of them and that is what this thread is about.
I am working on a final prototype of a passive console that uses twenty total RCA jacks which means at $4 per jack the price gets up to $80 just for the frikkin' RCA's !!!!!!!!!!
being a cheap bastard I needed to go out of bounds a bit and shave a few bucks that I not only could use for another project but I flat out have a problem with spending that much for a stupid connectore to begin with and the RCA is a STOOPID connector that never should have been used for audio.
Looking around it came to me that rear entry jacks only get MORE expensive and not less than the above unless I wanted to use those pre-mounted pcb types that are so popular in commercial gear but just not me so not an option. My feeling is they are no better or no wrse than the el cheapos with the only real difference being the socially acceptable gold flash plating
Then I checked out the "bottom feeder" Switchcraft 3501R nickel plated rear entry jacks at half the price ($40 for the set even with the insulators that cost extra) figuring what the hell, this jack is made by a reputable company and has been around damn near forever so worth a shot and if it sucks I could just pull it and go back to the other right ?
Well folks I guess I have finally gone over the edge and lost my damn mind because I have no problem with these jacks other than that they do not weight a ton, have no gold and are not expensive. No matter how hard I try I can not hear an actual difference between the two on the same exact panel and sharing the same friggin' selector switch which leads me to either turning in my audiophile/tweak head badge and saving a bundle over the years or soending the long green so i can again become a respectable member of society !
I think the former though I maybe won't be so quick to let others see the "undies" of my home brew gear
oh yeah, they solder like a dream and none of that "connector as heat sink" crap that makes after market "audiophile" jacks such a bitch to solder
GO TEAM CHEAP BASTARD !
