Dear friends, I'm sure that there'll be many other newbies like me here, who visit these threads looking for advice and information on headphones and headphone amplifiers who are mystified by the terms more experienced members use to describe their equipment and listening experiences. I've found browsing these threads entertaining and informative, but at times frustrating and intimidating. Frustrating because I don't understand and intimidating, in so far as I feel inhibited from asking questions that reveal more than my ignorance of the subject. This site provides an excellent reference point that I've found very helpful... www.audioc.com/library1/glossary.htmGiven another thousand hours or so on my headphones and amplifier, I'll feel ready to share my experiences

"Given another thousand hours or so on my headphones and amplifier, I'll feel ready to share my experiences"
Why wait that long? Post a thread after a couple of weeks use, then say 500 hours, and 1,000 hours.

Ask away, you would not own the title or right to asking "dumb" questions. I do!

I think as long as people are polite and don't use annoying capitalisation hi-fi gurus seem much happier to impart their wisdom than your standard forum crawler. I suppose they are less concerned with a dialectic because they readily admit their hobby is not a science but an art.

I find the more I post the quicker I pick up stuff. It makes you think carefully about your posts. Now if only I could figure out whether I am a P.R.a.T or have a P.R.a.T or should search for P.R.a.T in the understairs cupboard then I'll be happier EDIT: Amended the A to lower case so I don't feel such a Prat

Yo Toad, I thought that Google = Practical Research on Any Topic (P.R.A.T.) Another ETLA for your collection (ETLA = Extended TLA) Whereas PRaT = Pace, Riddim, and Timing, if these essential ingredients are missing from your audio diet, you may find yourself Linning to a change to components from those people whose Naim I cannot recall right now. At least, so I have been led to believe Is all OK mr Leporello, I recall (and frequently ignore) that I was once told "you have two ears and one mouth - use them in that proportion and you will do well" - you may notice that many posts are like this one - little more than idle chit - chat, join in by all means please. Share what you do know and learn from what you do not.

"Whereas PRaT = Pace, Riddim, and Timing, if these essential ingredients are missing from your audio diet" Those Pommy magazine reviewers from the 80's have a lot to answer for ! A not so well known abbreviation that this brings to mind, is "W.A.L.O.C." - What A Load Of Crap ! Another very apt abbreviation is "G.I.G.O." - Garbage In = Garbage Out. SandyK

Hey Tony, I used to read those magazines , and it never ceased to amaze me how they coined new phrases to try and explain what they were hearing. What is wrong with the use of words Pommy, Aussie, Yank, Kiwi etc. if other not so nice words aren't used with them, as long as it is only for a gentle dig ? Are we all that thin skinned? Personally, I think that with HI FI, the phrase G.I.G.O. is a very good one, in that it reminds people that even the best ancillary equipment in the world can't make poor source material or equipment sound good. In fact higher quality ancillary equipment is likely to reveal warts and all. BTW, no offence was intended, and I would hope that more than a couple of our U.K. members may even possibly agree with me about some of those reviewers like Ken Kessler etc. OOps, I almost forgot Alvin Gold ! ( I think that was his name)

Reviewers? Failed Critics more like!
Maybe not all of them, but have you noticed they never listen to commercial vinyl, just that absolute shite that's specially recorded by record labels the average person has never heard of.
I received some so called audiophile pressings from an "equipment label" and promptly threw them straight in the wheelie bin after listening to them for about five minutes each - UTTER F'ING CRAP!
And the guys who record them think they're oh so marvellous.
No wonder I have to be so bloody careful who I send my products to for review!
Too much asshole creeping in the Hi-Fi-Fo-Fum press!

"Sure you're not thinking of Alvin Purple ?" No. Alvin Purple was more like you in your younger days ? Alvin Gold and Martin Colloms were another 2 of those "inventive" audio reviewers.

You mean they invent stories? In other words, they don't report on what they actually hear, because it would hurt them to have to tell the truth.
