I wish I still had this deck. Fond memories, possibly rose tinted, but a wonderfully functional design. If I remember correctly, the music seemed to flow with ease and it painted a superb emotional picture. It never sounded boring or lacking in excitement. Downsides, it had a tendency to sound a bit shut in, boxy and claustrophobic. Seemed great value for money back in the day, price of the current equivalent appears to have shot up but I believe this is a better record player still. Second hand values of these players are very strong.
Any current or former users? Is it all one could ever want?

Forgot to mention, there's a huge market in so called upgrades for these turntables. I even tried one myself, the CS Split Slab. This junked the plinth and replaced it with a more substantial semi suspended type of affair. Bit hit and miss really, some gains, some losses.
Anyone tried to improve on the classic design?

I had the Planar 3 and foolishly let it go when my CD's outnumbered my LP's. I recently bought the RP01 and am once again enjoying my records. You could do the same?!

Is it as good as the Planar 3 though? I am using the ortofon cartridge which came free with the turntable. I hope to upgrade this soon, my opinion is that with the bias 2 or even carbon it will be as good yes. I have upgraded my amp from the x1 to the A3 (MF) since letting the Planar go however, so the phono stage of the A3 could be playing it's part. What other equipment are you using, this would help me to advise you better I think?

Yes, it's a DJ's workhorse for sure. As you wouldn't want a discoteque in your living room, you seem to be arriving at the right choice yourself. Home equipment is serving a quite different need, you will love a rega.

No, I'm happy with the Technics SL1210 mark 2, it's staying. I've had a Rega Planar 3 & Linn Sondek LP12 in the past.

Rox,
Have a look at the wow and flutter measurements for the Technics. Even SandyK would be impressed.
