Just bought one of these:
www.behringer.com/EN/Products/DEQ2496.aspx
Have placed it between my Squeezebox Touch and V-DACii. Connected with TOSLINK for now and will swap to XLR connections when I have bought / DIY'd some adaptors.
Took most of yestyerday to learn how it works. It's a complicated little beast because it does so much more than EQ. But once I got to grips with it it's pretty easy to create some EQ curves and save them for later recall. I could have a curve for my HD681s for example. It also does "ultra-high resolution 61-band real-time FFT analyzer with additional auto EQ function for room and loudspeaker equalization". I can play with this for hours... no, make that weeks ;-) I tried that function out and it tends to over-do the correction. But one can set limits to control the auto EQ. Today I'm going to see by how much I can improve my little JBL Control Ones. Will be interesting to see by how much they can be tweaked and improved?
So far the DEQ2496 seems to be perfectly transparent. When all the effects are by-passed I can't tell it's in the (digital) chain. I can't easily put it in and out of the signal path right now because I don't have enough leads (more TOSLINKS should arrive soon). But when I do have enough connection options I'll be able to switch between listening to sources direct or via the DEQ2496. That'll be interesting. And then I'll move over to XLR; the DEQ2496 allows SPDIF via XLR as well as AEU, it's switchable.
Digital is 'limited' to 24/96 so when I play any 24/192 files I'll have to be content to allow the Squeezebox system to downsample to 24/96. Small price to pay for using such a fun bit of kit.
OK, you can all pile in now and tell me why I shoudn't be doing this ;-)
