My model 2 Ergo headphones and Model 1 amp arrived this afternoon. Got the two in absolutely brand new condition for £135 so I'm pretty over the moon specially considering they both sound fantastic.
here's a pic:
I've had a very brief listen and like the ERGO 2 headphones a lot, surprisingly they're more bassy than the Senn HD-600, I didn't think they'd be anywhere near as bassy... bit of a result then!
I had the amp on for about 30 minutes and couldn't resist it.... I opened her up. When I saw the "Hitano" capacitors under the bonnet I just had to go in and replace with 1200uF Panasonic FM. Now let me tell you this amp is put together like a brick shithouse and getting access to the PCB involves a total stripdown, this isn't one of these mickey mouse slid in a groove jobs you've got to navigate many screws and break quite a few taped seals to get the thing to come apart... I would hate to work at precide that's all I have to say on the subject... it must take them ages to put these together, very like a mini version of a mac (McIntosh) the front panel is not only bolted to the chassis it's also supplemented with sealant.
Anyways, once you get her out of the box here's what you find:
Certainly not yer run of the mill el cheapo PCB, far from it. For some strange reason they've cut off some of the ground tracks in places (and not very neatly either)
Quite a few cuts like this on the board I wonder why. Main thing is it works fine so probably best to leave well alone, it's been done for a reason.
Anyways, don't want to drone all night as my soldering iron is about to see action in another amp so best get on..... brief facts and figures are as follows:
BA5415A power amplifier
L7815CV positive voltage regulator
3Watt output
Built like a brick shit house
Sounds fantastic (really ballsy) especially with Grado 'phones (great with Senns too you can feel the diaphragms pumping air onto your ears, great control)
Ohhhhh, and when I was under the bonnet I couldn't resist replacing all the electrolytics, here they are:
PSU is pretty shite, 8.6VA 15VAC wallwart, so plenty of scope here for improvement. I just can't believe this beauty retails for only £169... incredible for the price and not just for use with the ERGO headphones either
More on this amp later..................
