I came to this forum because, besides non-metal / rock, I listen to a lot of rock and metal. I'm looking for new headphones within the 100 - <300 price range that can suite my needs. My very... metal needs. I also want them to sound good with other music too. I want balanced headphones (if that's feasible).
I currently have a pair of G35 headphones, and a pair of bose AE2 headphones. I recently returned a pair of Hifiman HE-400 headphones. I couldn't appreciate the sound of the HE-400 headphones compared to my other headphones; maybe I just didn't like them. Whatever though.
I was actually directed to this forum from the head fi community (a community of helpful, good guys). One recommendation, and one of the things I have looked into, are the Grado SR80. Due to the things I see, about people saying the Grado SR80 are uncomfortable, these headphones don't seem like a viable alternative to my current headphones.
The second alternative is, headphones I could not find a review for, the Fostex TR50. I've been told they are very comfortable, and sound "superb, if you're willing to make a few easy mods". I don't know what that means.
I would appreciate whatever help I can get. The ultimate goal is to find headphones in my budget (that are the best!).
I forgot to mention, these headphones will not be mobile. They're going to be for use on my desktop computer.

Hello, euhm, hpwarmaster, First of all, welcome to the forum. You'll find several headphone modding threads here, turning cheapish headphones into good ones. Several higher end headphones are reviewed and/or discussed here also, just have a look around and learn to know members' tastes in order to judge yourself. Specifically about Fostex T50RP modding, details can be found here: rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/8832/fostex-t50rpKind regards, Marc

My very... metal needs. I also want them to sound good with other music too. I want balanced headphones (if that's feasible). For metal music, you must have a HP with a lot of driving bass as well as PRAT. So a dynamic (Senns, AT, Beyer, etc) one will be better than an isodynamic (Hifiman, Audeze, etc) one. It's best that you listen to them before you purchase as it's very personal flavour when it comes to sound. However, I can recommend you hear the Denon D2000 as I was told by a hifi crazy in my local forum it's great for hard hitting rock and roll. Perhaps, Ian can chip in on this Denon thingy as he has one. I'm not surprise that the Hifiman didn't fit your bill as it's an isodynamic HP. Not too good for metal IMVHO. But how do you find the Bose AE2 for your metal lust? Just as a reference of whether dynamic HP can suit better your muzak taste. One recommendation, and one of the things I have looked into, are the Grado SR80. Due to the things I see, about people saying the Grado SR80 are uncomfortable, these headphones don't seem like a viable alternative to my current headphones. You have to buy the Jumbo foam pads for comfort. No regret. However, Grado is noted for PRAT and a brighter signature and not much bass. The second alternative is, headphones I could not find a review for, the Fostex TR50. I've been told they are very comfortable, and sound "superb, if you're willing to make a few easy mods". I don't know what that means. But this is an isodynamic HP. You better try it for metal before plunging in.

I'm here, reading your posts. I need to get around to answering them when I feel in the right state of mind. I don't want to jump into a response and get carried away and off track. Maybe some time today or tomorrow (probably tonight) I'll make a response. Right now I just can't.

I don't want to jump into a response and get carried away and off track. You're maybe in the wrong forum then Seriously, no-one is suddenly going to butt in and say "Hey, you're going off topic there". That may happen in other forums - but not here. Here it's par-for-the-course, and all the better for it Jeff P.S. Thought about Beyerdynamic DT990's? They have a smiley FR which is good for rock and metal. rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/8245/beyerdynamic-dt990-pro-recabled

Oh, Beyer's. Yes they have a U shaped FR. I liked the DT880's for rock and metal. Other more "delicate" music, not as much. Cheers, Ron

I fear we're not representing ourselves very well. AND THAT'S GREAT! What is everyone planning for dinner tonight anyway?

What a great idea, though I suspect licorice laces would give a richer and sweeter tone

For metal music, you must have a HP with a lot of driving bass as well as PRAT. What is PRAT? Power to Rock As Thunder? I have the Denon D2000’s and while I like them I’m not sure they are great for rock/metal. No sure if they are agile/tight enough in the trebles. They do have a driving bass I suppose but for faster metal I would think the bass is actually a bit to pronounced.

What is PRAT? Power to Rock As Thunder? Power Rocking All Tits. Ok, ok, just pulling your legs. Pace, Rythm And Timing. Originator is Ken Kessler of Hifi News if I'm not wrong.

I'm back. I decided I don't want headphones for stationary use. I recently got an iPod 160 gigs and it holds my entire library, and I feel like I never want to be tethered to my computer ever again.
I have a pare of Bose AE2 headphones. I've had them for a couple years. They work alright, I guess. Although on really rumbly death metal songs I hear a rattling sound.
Also, it's important to mention, I wear my headphones outside to run a lot. I practically never take these things off. I don't know if could have a pair that sound better. I'd certainly like to look into it though. These seem to have been surprising resilient for the time I've had them.
That's all I want. Headphones that are resilient and portable, and have good across the board sound quality. I don't want headphones designed for just metal, I want headphones designed for everything.
I forgot to mention, the Bose AE2 headphones hurt my ears because the foam pads collapse after a while. Comfort is also a major key factor in new headphones for me. Erm... I hope I don't have my hopes too high. I still want a pair of headphones in the 100-<200 dollar range. Maybe a little over 200, but I figure unless they'd be really durable, great sounding and comfortable, I don't really need to spend that much.
