The REAL talent was the Kinks.

Yup, the almost title equivalent to Beatles' Hard Day Night. Your pick of which is a more serious Rock and Roll track to rock and roll your soul. The Kinks anytime ............... My favourite Kinks' album and still is ........... Samples: Easily as good as your most favourite band albums and you know who.

Being a yank, and since they are yours and not mine I will defer to your opinion on the subject.......The hell I will. ;D Don't get me wrong I think the Kinks have written some of the most creative and copied songs in rock. But, and Ian help me out here, in terms of the enormous musical ground the Beatles covered in a very short time and yes, luck of being around in the 60's, the Beatles have been covered more and still sell more music and are still listened to by young people, and still have young people wearing their T-shirts that I think it might be a slight lean in their favor. So I grant a tie. Until tomorrow when I am better rested. ;D Good topic for a thread Mike. I promise not to cause too much of a row. As I have had a Hard Day's Night, and I'm So Tired as I haven't slept a wink, I wil bid you Good Night and sleep tight. Ron PS- I just got the Schiit Audio DAC. More on that Schiit later.

Unfortunately, a lot of the Beatles' creativity came from George Martin imo. Sure, Paul can write pretty tunes but imo, he's very limited. I know he's successful and rich and all that but his stuff never really affected me in the slightest. Some parts of Beatle albums are ok. However when you consider the stuff that they overshadowed, you do wonder how. Pink Floyd for instance. The Who. Kinks. Stones. Lonnie Donegan The song that McCartney sang with Michael Jackson made him sound like an amateur. Also, I was gobsmacked by his musical ignorance when he proudly said that for his second to last album, he bought a ukelele and taught himself a few chords (big deal) and then found a new one so he used it on his album. He couldn't even work out what the chord was. I was really shocked at his musical ignorance. His attempt at an oratorio is laughable. He wrote the Liverpool Oratorio. What a joke. He improvised melodies on a piano and sang the melodies while Carl Davis wrote them down and scored them for orchestra. For anything serious, he needs crutches!!! I' d rather hear the Monkees. Best Beatles for me? Magical Mystery and some of Pepper's. I think they were slightly lucky too!!! (sorry Ron)

Easy vote for me as I never was a Beatles fan whereas the Kinks did plenty I like. Strangely, one of the few songs I do like by them was "A Hard Days Night". However, I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, "Let It Be", every time I hear that damn song I want to smack the radio off the shelf, jump up and down on it, pulverise it into tiny pieces and defecate on the remains! Apart from that it's OK

I think most you are missing the main point....
Te Beatles were easier to market overseas than the other bands. Especially the first coming out of England.
The Stones or Kinks were more in your face, whether that would be acceptable to other countries would be debatable. The Beatles caused enough of an uproar around the world with their music, and Ringo was/could be classified as the dangerous one ;D:)
As many bands seem to have "the" main talent, IMO I think it seems to be the music the band can make as a whole. Hmmm ego's
As for McCartney musical talents, I preferred Harrison's "while my guitar gently weeps"

I couldn't agree more! They were, essentially, a skiffle band with as much musical talent as an emporer penguin.... it was George Martin who came up with all the "tunes" and scores from around 1966 onward (IMO).... Paul McCartney is a bloody fraud and takes all the credit for himself as if he's some great musical genuis.... he's not! He's no more than a monkey grinding George Martin's organ. Don't get me wrong, I like the Beatles BUT there were far better bands with a lot more talent at the time.... people waffle on about the "Lennon and McCartney" lyrics as if they are works of genius..... a load of old rubbish if you ask me! "she loves you yeh, yeh, yeh" "I wanna hold your hand" "love love me do" "yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dogs eye" etc. etc. etc. What a load of "pish" The Kinks, on the other hand (Ray Davies in particular) wrote some beautiful lyrics which really were quintessentially "English"... each one a little story which made sense.... no need for rubbish like "I am the walrus" or other nonsensical stuff, they managed to paint a picture without having to go abstract.... quality stuff

Probably my favourite McCartney solo track was "C moon".... for the simple reason that it showed his true amateur style and didn't profess to be anything other than "unplugged" McCartney..... "C moon are we"....... yeh, deep

Very interesting take you have on "your" lads. I know you are correct about marketing them overseas. I was almost 8 when they were first on the Ed Sullivan show. Wow, our parents were so out of their minds the next day. It took me months to get my Dad to even consider having a Beatles album in the house. Both my Mom and Dad hated their hair, music, sense of humor and they were (not that!) not Americans. Plus my folks went from the Big Bang sound to The Beatles, The Who, The Stones etc. They had heard maybe one Elvis song before that. As to Sir Paul. I don't own very many of his solo albums as I agree a lot of the songs are rubbish or just throw offs. He didn't seem to take the solo years very seriously in effort. This conversation would be somewhat different over here. But I think the whole Beatlemania thing was different here. The Establishment repeatedly flipped over things they would say about using drugs, Jesus, etc. right up until they broke up. There is still a huge fascination here with the whole 60's thing and politically we are still fighting some of the same battles. All because you guys had to send over these radical musicians! ;D I guess I hear different things in their music than others, but that's OK. Took me decades to find out I like classical. and would venture I am probably the only one here who has at least a dozen books about the Beatles including a couple of technical music books breaking it all down in musical theory. You would understand them Ian. I only get about the first 3 pages of each chapter, so they where a quick read. I think the big thing for me is how they went from yeah, yeah, yeah in 1964 to Something in 1969. Hope everyone is having a restful weekend. I'm off to another retirement party. When the hell is mine?? Ron

I have changed my avatar too for the week to something 60's British Invasion to remain colonial connected for obvious reason .................... However, very yanky for that Trans-Atlantic song outlook below. Yeah, Japanese LP format for the best sound to bring back true peace and easy memories of that era. You guys must lollipop this or else ................... There are lyrics and something to karaoke along too if you fancy ............. Come on and have a beer and sing song, talk cock on this nice Sunday sunny day at least in Singapore. This song don't need to stretch your vocal cords to the limit. Flat will do .........

Having been a young teen when the Bee-at-les (Help!) came to fame with Vee-Jay's "Introducing the Beatles" and Capitol's "Meet the Beatles" albums (in mono), I was a fan of those 2 albums. But, not much after those got to me. However, The Animals, Kinks, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Spencer Davis with Stevie Winwood, Yardbirds, Rolling Stones (early Stones please), the 12 string Searchers, are still on my list of must plays.
There was a Saturday night dance in those days (1966-7) at 2 halls in cities west of Detroit and the band that was always there was one of Ted Nugent's early projects...I think he was a year older than me. Point here being that I don't remember one Beatles song being rendered there..."We gotta get outta this place"..usually ended the night.
We liked the Beatles then and the other British bands cause before them we had Motown and Rock-a-billy...and all the knock offs of those guys. So, real rocking bands just weren't...in the States.
But then, after that in Dee-troit came the MC-5 and the Stooges...so there was progress :-) J
