The Bowie voice is still there, just and it looks very retrospective to me. A simple love song to his wife? Looks like he's thinking about the end as long as he's here!! He's here..... for her!! It's ok. No big guitar solos.Big fat backing with 7th chords and Bowie typically singing his short phrases in twos. I can't see it doing too well in the top ten unless people buy it just because it's him and possibly the last thing we may hear from him. I was never a great fan of Bowie until I saw him perform live. From then I was hooked. His band was amazingly good. I think the show was recorded - at the BBC. I loved his contribution in 'Moulin Rouge' - 'There was a boy'. Every time I hear that, the tingles get a going.

Wow, quite a drastic change from the Bowie's sound I know. Yup, have a retrospective sound and now more uncle and aunty like as most singers age. Heh, heh, he has lost that gay look.

Somehow I feel there is a "middle eight" missing as John Lennon used to say. But what do I know. I still can't figure out the "circle of 5ths". At first I thought it was drinking game. ;D Ron

;D ;D The circle of 5ths is just basically going up 5 notes, starting on C. You will get every key, starting with sharps. 1 sharp = g, 2 = d (5 up), 3= A, 4 = E, 5 = B, 6 = F# which is the same as Gb, 7 = C# = Db, 8 = Ab = 9 = Eb, 10 = Bb, 11 = F, and 12 takes us back to C. That's every flat and sharp key that we have in Western music, based around the circle of 5ths!!! With Moulin Rouge, I just love the way Bowie goes for that last note, with such a sense of conviction. He really kind of lunges at that note and every time I hear it, I think that he has a helluva voice. Mind you, I like Twisted Sister now as well!!! (Voulez Vous coucher avec moi, ce soire!!) A dirty title and a great recording!! I love Moulin Rouge. (and been to the windmill in Paris too!!)

We teachers have a saying. " Some Professors teach. Other Professors profess." Not that all teachers teach. That's a variable as well. So, A+ to Professor Ian for teaching, teacher Ron, the circle of 5ths. Ian, wish you had been my music theory prof, I might actually understand it. Hey, is there a Music Theory for Dummies type book out there? Cheers, Ron

I like this single too... Not a big Bowie fan but I have 'Heathen'. Two or three great songs there I think. Derek.

I always had him down as a transexual. I think he's Bi Mike, but decided to stay on one side of the fence nowadays. I'm glad you got it Ron. I was wondering whether it was too much information!! You know, the funniest thing is when you get students who tell you how disgusting modern music is etc, when what they really mean is that they don't understand what is going on and because they can't get it into any kind of format that they're comfortable with, they announce it as crap!!! The two that are dead easy to teach and the students enjoy working with and then get an appreciation of American (!!) orchestral music is minimalism. To some extent, I worked with this in pop music but once you show students how phasing works in music and then all the obvious patterns like retrograde (backwards, Inverted (upside down), augmentation (making the note values longer and diminution (shorter), then you piece their work together, they are instantly impressed by minimalism and gain a real insight into Steve Reich who I really admire. He wrote an amazing piece called 'City Life' and this adds the idea of real life 'samples' and the students get hooked on it. The other one would you believe is Serialism. Once you give them a few ideas as to how to form a composition of their own, as soon as they hear the first few 'horror' type sounds, they're hooked and become very proud of their pieces. Being a music teacher, I'm sure you know those two styles. They work really well without having to have any knowledge of keys or chords. The other thing is, because of my commercial background, many people underestimate my experience and knowledge of music which is far wider than my known work goes. I've been very lucky to have met the people I have and learned from them but the life can be ghastly so I decided to get myself into the position of being able to choose what I do, only if I want to. What was interesting was writing a run down of YELLO's albums which are all wonderful gems in the electronica world and how people on here started to read what I wrote and then got the albums quickly in order to follow what I had written. Just shows you that many people are interested not only in the sound or band, but how the music is constructed. The funny thing is, is how the same trademark sounds start to appear in each album and so people start to realise that they are kind of working tried and tested formulas that become part of their 'stock' sounds and makes them recognisable in their next release. You are a music teacher aren't you, Ron?

Some days I wish I was Ian. I'm a physics teacher. I teach a regular course sometimes but most of time I teach the Advanced Placement class. It's college level taught in high school. But music is really my first love, more listening than playing though. As far as music I teach how the instruments create the sound waves, frequency, pitch, harmonics, overtones, resonances etc. I play some guitar by ear and read a little tab but that's about it. Every so often I get "serious" and get together with a couple of friends and we rehearse for a couple of months trying to do a few Crosby, Stills and Nash harmonies and some Beatles, Neil Young etc. then life interferes and we pick up again in a couple of years. I took a music theory class years ago. Unfortunately he didn't have your talent for explaining things. He tried poor fellow. Plus there was a stoner in the back that kept playing with his keyboard during lecture. ;D I didn't learn much, it fact I think it confused me more than anything. But hey, thanks for the complement. Cheers, Ron PS-I "explained" the circle of 5ths to my T.A. today, she is taking advanced music theory, and she says I get it. Only took me 30 years.
