The more I listen to the S2, the more I really do like it. I was using the DT990 this morning and listening to 'Thick as a Brick' by Jethro himself. To start with, I used the Neco 18v amp. I noticed the heft in the bass of the DT990 and quite a bit of 'tizz' on cymbals. I have often heard this with the 'Brick' recording. That bass, skipping all over the place can be quite strong. I thought that it was just the recording, being quite early and all that, followed by poor remastering onto CD. (Such a pity about the ruination of LP stuff on early CD) I changed over to the S2 and it became way more balanced sounding. I know that the Neco has the 8610's fitted which are not my favourite if I'm honest, although I understand that they are supposedly good in portable amps for power reasons etc. I know that the output impedance of the Neco is close to zero or 1 so it's basically very low. Now I'm wondering what the S2 output impedance is. The Beyers work well on the whole from higher output impedance imo and on the S2, the tizz falls away and the bass is just less boomy than it was on the Neco!! The extra clarity got me hearing much more of the 'inner' patterns of this album and being much more aware of them. This is something I have noticed a lot with better equipment - the inner detail (although is still there with lesser stuff) but it just becomes much easier to track individually. The S2 is producing that inner detail really well. This is something that is pretty important with the DT990 which will tend to go towards boom and tizz very easily, but present it with a good, balanced signal and it's just really lush and detailed. It's a lovely headphone as well, but the pairing needs to be right with it. I think the S2 is going to be an addition to my 'working' museum when this one goes home. With time, it just grows with each recording I listen to. There's nothing obvious at the start. It's good and it hits you, but I'm finding the subtleties of inner detail are starting to become revealed via this amp. Even listening to myself, there's detail I never knew about! (Sorry, I did really.....)

Excellent way of describing things Ian... this is exactly what i hear with better equipment.
The inner detail as you put it, together with the fact that better equipment don't impress me immediately... usually i find that the impressive equipment have a brightness that usually gets tiresome after a while.

I agree, Chris. A sound that is immediately impressive can become the very thing that becomes tiresome in the long term.
At first, I found the top clarity of the K701 absolutely stunning. After a while, I started to crave more bass and the one thing that knocked it on the head for me was that the treble (for me) had a kind of 'ring' contained in it which turned out to be some kind of resonance right in the top.
I gave up with it then.
I have had a nice surprise using the Sony V6 with the S2. I would describe this headphone (like the 7506) as top focused with a strong bass that can be a bit flabby. It's analytical and can give a real insight into recording artifacts etc.
On the S2, it sounds more balanced imo. That flabby bass gets tightened and I think that the positioning of sounds is better. The bass in particular retains the attractive slam of old but it dies quicker so you get quite a kick from them but clarity remains.
I'm not sure yet, whether it's my imagination, the recording or whatever, but I think that there's less sibilance too. (The V6 easily verges into sibilance on the slightest hint of toppiness)
The V6 is better than I first thought really and it's a very low priced headphone. It's getting the amp right which seems more important than anything with headphones. (I guess the front end helps too though!!)
Listening to Dave Gilmour's, 'On an Island' is bringing out a lot of spacial information and once again, inner stuff that is played at low volume behind the main body of sound.
Bass drum and snare on this recording is absolutely delicious. The V6 brings out the deep attack on the bass drum and the crack of the snare brilliantly. On 'Take a Breath', you can hear the individual bells on the tambourine that plays quietly under the mix. That particular track gets pretty thick in texture and takes some unraveling and even the Sony V6 is able to get in there and pull out the strands.

I'd say that it's warmer and has more impact in the bass than the X-Can V2. The V2 sounds more sharply focused but I think the S2 has more 'authority' in its sound. TBH, I like both a great deal. They're just slightly 'different.'
Don't forget, My V2 has had a fully Mikey Mod and a Little Pinkie, so it's well kitted out.
The S2 has two inputs which is really handy as well.

I know .... I'm sorry!! The two things I would like to get are the S2 and the DAC32. Addd that together and you get £600 to £700. The DAC32 is just stunning. The S2 is an absolute beauty. Since it's the cheaper of the two, I think I'll be getting an S2. It's a cracker of an amp and I REALLY like it a lot. T1 isn't far behind either tbh. I got one of those after I'd heard it as well.

decided to try and fit the upgrade kits to my x10 and v2. if this goes to plan i will reward myself with an s2 for comparison. had SS before, a zero, little dot mk5, and a solo Sg and ultra linear.
