Picked up a 2nd hand SL1210 for £80, it looks as good as new and works perfectly. Judging by the person i bought it off and the amount of dust on the top i would be very surprised if it has ever been used for anythign other than the very occasional play of a record.
The only issue i have found is the phono cable has received some damage and really could do with replacing.
I am more than happy to take it to bits and solder a new cable in.
I was wondering if there is any preference to a particular type of cable being used for a deck?
I was even wondering about fitting some phono sockets to the underside?
any advise greatly received!
Andy

Andy,
Check out the last year or so of Hi-Fi World to see what you can do to make the old 1200/1210 into a giant-killer.

Hi, At the risk of incurring (mild) wrath I suggest you take a look at Art of Sound forum. There is a high concentration of very enthusiastic and knowledgeable Technics fanatics on there, particularly Marco, the forum owner. Ask your question on there and you'll receive more good advice than you can handle . Dave.

Andy.
I rewired a Rega RB250 tonearm a couple of years ago. The better kits used a continuous length of Cardas 24awg cable from the cartridge jacks, along the arm, to the external phonos, but I just used Cardas for the arm and soldered it to some old Chord interconnects (at the base of the arm) I had (cost me £30 all in compared to £120 for a full kit). I picked the Chords because they were quite fine & flexible - in many cases the lead runs into the arm and too stiff a cable can affect the turntables suspension.

You should not only use highly flexible cable, but the cable should be of the appropiate capacitance. There should be indepth info available at the site referred to. Alex

Alex, I had heard about the capacitance of the cable, this was the main reason I was asking the question. Thank you all, will have a look and see what I find!
Think I am going to stick to the standard arm for now as I have managed to buy another pair of headphones! Oops.
