Yes, well, this one impresses and is now part of my top 3 renditions of Antonio Vivaldi's "Le Quattro Stagioni" i.e., "The Four Seasons". Top 3 as in "different but equal in favor".
The first of the previous Top 2: "Giuliano Carmignola and the Venice Baroque Orchestra" on the Sony label. This one has been a revelation since day one....energy, intensity, superbly recorded, and just so involving, and invigorating. Plus you get some added violin concerti of Vivaldi's after the "Four Seasons". A must hear.
The other of the previous top 2: "Il Giardino Armonico" performing the "Four Seasons" of Vivaldi on the Teldec label. As a hint of the forthcoming rendition one will be experiencing on this cd...the cover art depicts a Cello being blown apart by, at the least, a thirty odd six, bullet! Yes, "The Harmonious Gardener's" are going to take you on a ride....baroque style, on this version. It is in a league and class of it's own, superbly played, even more intense and energetic, and yet, one can't help but feel that the composer just might have had this interpretation in mind. He may have written the notes and some instructions down on some paper, but who's to say.....This one has "feeling" in spades!
Now, the new rendition, which, for me, takes it's place in this select group, is again, a version by Giuliani Carmignola. This one is on the "Divox Antiqua" label which I believe is Swiss (the words La Suisa being on the back cover). The orchestra this time is, in Italian, Sonatori de la Gioisa Marca. (If there are Italian speaking readers, please translate the name for me, the liner notes don't). From looking at the cd, it appears that the original recording was done in 1994, but has been remastered to 24/96 in 2008. As wonderful as the previous renditions of "Le Quattro Stagioni" were, for me....this one only slightly surpasses both because of the fantastic quality of the recording, while keeping with the intensity, original interpretions, and involvment likened of the other 2, whilst being unique to itself. I've owned it for a while now, and when having this cd on, I find myself putting my book down, or releasing control of the mouse, just listening and enjoying.
My headphone system is a Vincent KHV-111. This tube input (one of myTelefunken 12AX7 or ECC83) transistor output, gigantic toroidal transformer based amp with dual volume controls powers my AKG-702's (used for Classical music especially).
A point of note: I absolutely relish having dual volume controls on both the Vincent headphone amp and the Croft preamp. Works for me!
So, another "Four Seasons"....but what a rendition! Hope you like it, too.........JM
