Hi Ian, Crossbills are more likely to be seen further North than the Glasgow area I have never seen one down here, think they are confined to Argyllshire and up to Sutherland in Scotland....... don't think they get as far as Mike's neck of the woods though..................nae trees up that far for the Pine nuts. I took this one south of Helmsdale May 2010 heading for Dunnet inCaithness. I think it's an Eagle it was a good distance away. This one was taken in Strathclyde Park 2006 a Buzzard.

Just for the sake of completeness, thought I'd better add that the only time we ever see Firecrests is at the back end of the year. We have a lavender plant that I think would take over the garden if I let it and as the flowers fade and are replaced by little seed pods (I assume) they descend as a family group and decimate it for a while. We might see them, on and off for a few days and that's it until next year .

Hi Dave, Goldcrests are resident in Scotland but I've never seen one, the Firecrest is confined to the very South of England if yours appear in the autumn the're probably migrant from the continent here for the winter. I've one here that you might not have seen it comes in from Scandinavia gets to us about second week in October usual flock of them amounts to about eighty birds they just strip our golden Rowan of berries. Let's see if I can upload a few pics. Quite a striking bird. Alan
