Currently I use the analog out of a Touch to feed an older Marantz 2230B receiver. I am considering the purchase of an Emotiva DAC which is being closed out and selling for $199 USD including S&H. Based on specs do you feel it will be worth it? Thanks. shop.emotiva.com/collections/processors/products/xda1

Thanks. shop.emotiva.com/collections/processors/products/xda1Miguel At that price, unless you want to use the USB input, I would grab one quickly.USB does seem likely to be throttled back to 16/48. A problem could be that a Mac may only have USB audio , and you would still need a reasonable soundcard to use it with high resolution material.TBH, I don't think too much of USB audio unless it is in Asynchronous mode, and the USB input of this DAC is unlikely to be. Regards Alex

Hi Alex, the iMac has optical out so no problem there. As far as asynchronous mode from the USB the reports I have read are contradicting so no way to know for sure. But at $200 for the office it jus might fit the bill.

Gordon Rankin ( Mr. USB ) developed Asynchronous mode software which is now licensed to many major DAC manufacturers. It still isn't perfect though. as a good front end is still important. You will find quite a few discussions about this in Computer Audiophile where Gordon occasionally shares some of his wisdom. Grab that DAC while it's still at that low price. If you don't really like it you should be able to sell it without losing on the deal. I expect that you are likely to be tied to 24/96 via optical from the Mac though. Kind Regards Alex

Alex when I wrote the word "contradicting" I meant some reports state the Emotiva dac has it and others it does not have it.

I am resurrecting this old thread because today I bit the bullet and ordered one. I will post some impressions once it is received. For now you can read more about it at: shop.emotiva.com/products/xda1

I picked up the Emotiva XDA-1 yesterday (August 18th) and placed it inservice with an old Marantz 2230B and driving an Stax SRD7 modified by Birgir driving a pair of Stax Lambda Pro. Very nice so far, I wish there was a way to bypass the analog pre-amp function and set the output to "fixed out". I have sent an inquiry to Emotiva, below is poor picture of the setup.

This Emotiva XDA-1 DAC at $199 USD with S&H has a lot of bang for the buck! I am very happy with the purchase.

I'm looking forward very much to your comments on the Emotiva XDA-1. At that price, if it turns out to be a stunner we all NEED to know! Surely the topic deserves its own thread?
